I think my gym is forcing it's students to be inside fighters

Classes are often pretty full and when sparring, we don't do it in the ring but on the floor and 15-20 people spar at the same time causing the floor to be pretty full. You can't really move around without tripping over someone's ankle

I actually forgot my question. Is sparring like this actually good preperation for amateur fights? It does force me to improve my block since I cant just move out of range

No its terrible just sounds like a cheap way of making everyone spar. How do you improve footwork? how to learn how to find your range etc?

Mate don't take this in the wrong way but it sounds utter ****. If your gonna spar do it right and tell your coach you refuse to spar like chickens without heads.. Boxing is far more complex than being an 'inside fighter'. Might work for someone else but might not work for you and vice versa

While yes it does sound like your coach is doing a disservice to your club, by not closely observing the guys sparring, at my gym we spar in a ring and our 3 coaches are closely watching the participants.

As far as in fighting, the past year I have watched fights scored in my state, and it seems like they are better scoring the in fighters. I have seen guys thoroughly out boxed, but swinging aggressively winning fights(decisions) without ring generalship. I would say maybe your coach is training you guys on the inside fight game, but it seems to me like your coaches are being too lazy.

the same problem is on my training too.. we have one trainer, and there is 30 (15 pairs) in same place sparring (more like boxing combinations, only lefts, attack/defense, only body etc..).. its not that he is trying to teach us in-fighting, its that we have no room and proper conditions so we do it this way! but when we do real sparring then is only one pair and trainer is focused only on them and they have all room they need so that is good..

proper sparring 15 pairs at a time would be terrible. but if it is just technical sparring then it is all good practice and you will get more out of 20 rounds of this as long as there is a strict structure in place than 6 rounds 'proper' sparing in a ring whilst supervised

And thats the most important element.... is it proper sparring, or if its tech work? If its tech then its all good.

Come on man. What do you expect for the peanuts of just a membership and general classes? That crap barely keeps the lights on. You want more? Pay for a camp or fight under the club.

This this this. Prove that you can do better than the rest and of club and they might pick you up and do private training for you. I managed to do this but you have to be VERY determined if you want to reach there. Even if your amazing but your coach sees that your not very self confident and having a solid decision then he would pick someone else who has that mentality.

If you want to spar, I think you should just ask or at least make it be known to the coaches. If you don't really stand out or make efforts to reach out (I don't have a huge amount of natural ability so I had to push it a bit), they most likely will leave you to your own devices.

My old gym, which I did love and I do highly respect my old coach, tried too hard to make us all inside fighters I think. I mean, it's important to know how to fight on the inside, but I think my current coach does a better job. I'm 6'6" with long arms, I don't need to be trading on the inside if I can help it and I certainly shouldn't be bobbing/weaving as much as I was.
/embarrassed by my first amateur fight when I see those things.
