Thing is Khan could well come back in next fight and look good like he did with Judah but if you look at consistency of displays there is none really. Paulie-Good enough display Maidana-Patchy, looked good for large periods then fell apart towards end due to being hurt. McCloskey-Struggled but was dominant against a fringe level operator IMO. Judah-Good, best display since Kotelnik IMO. Follow gameplan and looked technically good. Peterson-Ragged, Sloppy from round 3 onwards. It's extremely patchy, he seems to go one step forward two steps back.
Khan isn't even unique in this issue. Most commonly, it's the fighters who have an abundance of power and they come to rely on it. With Khan, he's so fast that simply throwing a lot, regardless of the technique and purpose behind it, can usually get him the win. Even as early as against Gary St Clair he was just punching the guy's guard without really trying to do effective work. Khan's issues now are there because his formative years as a pro were spent working with a very mediocre trainer. He couldn't get the discipline installed in Khan, he didn't work on anything technically, and it's just too late to train those things that should be muscle memory. If there was one thing that would make him much much better, it would be his feet. Just getting him to properly set his feet when he punches, and only punch when he's in position to do so, would make a massive difference. He'd punch harder, he'd have more space to pick his shots (round 1 against Maidana - that body shot came about because he set his feet and looked for the shot because he was at the right distance) and he'd be able to step out without looking like Road Runner. See I'd have said they were very flawed performances. he spent much of the Paulie fight missing with his jab, and Paulie isn't really slick. He's there to be hit with a bit of patience. Maidana... he ignored the one shot that really shook Maidana up, despite scoring a knockdown off of it. I thought he showed a lot of bravery but very little sense. Great fight though!
I do like Khan but I should've added a at the end He's not as bad as some people believe & even if you dont like him his fights are often quite entertaining.
Wow, you think?? A legendary all time great and possibly p4p hardest puncher ever, BETTER than KING Khan??? Big call right there. Not sure I'd be prepared to go THAT far. atsch:-( These kids make you despair sometimes.
Bravo, inevitably it always come back to british boxing's single biggest handicap, the lack of world-class/competent trainers in this country. I used to cringe watching Billy Graham lacing up the 'body-bag' and having Hatton wail away on it in those episodes of 24/7, bloody horrible. As for the famed Brendan Ingle gym, all of those fighter have terrible fundamentals. Enzo Calzaghe, how much of their success was down to Joe's natural talent & work ethic and how much was down to Enzo is open to debate. The success or lack of it of the other fighters out of the Newbridge gym suggests it was more down to Joe. Adam Booth can only be judged in a few years time but the signs are promising, he did well with Haye and Groves Degale fight shows that Booth can disect an opponent and come up with a winning strategy.
