Yep, it is ****ing ridiculous. I love watching PRIDE shows and I appreciate what they did in turning a lot of people on to the sport, however I also appreciate that the UFC is bringing us the best fights these days.

Mate, that's guys ****ing around on a TV show. It's a promo. You can do the same **** with NFL players making stupid TV ads. :-(

In the cage, it's a proper sport. No rigged outcomes, no refs taking instructions from backstage during the fight. No mid-fight rule changes to help the home favourite. No bonuses for taking a dive. None of that ****. A real, legitimate sport.

As I've already said, there were a lot of legendary fighters and nights in PRIDE. But if you're going to make pro-wrestling comparisons between PRIDE and the UFC, only one of those organizations came directly from pro wrestling and featured worked matches, scripted storylines and guys fighting in wrestling masks. :good

Name some fixed/scripted fights, I'll double it with legit ones. I wont even use Google

UFC borrowed from American Pro Wrestling, JMMA from Japanese Pro Wrestling. Simple to understand really. Bit like the pot calling the kettle black

Stoo, it's not a question of what proportion of fights were legit. It's unacceptable to have ANY Coleman-Takada or Metzger-Sakuraba type fiascos. It's unacceptable for referees to wear earpieces and get mid-fight instructions from someone else. That kind of **** means that it's not a legitimate sporting contest. Rather, it's an entertainment event.

It can be entertaining as hell, sure. It can feature legit matches. But if the promotion engages in these practices, that means it's not a legit sport. And whatever else you think about the UFC, it promotes a real, actual, legitimate sport.

    Wrong.

UFC fight outcomes are not preordained. None of the fights are fixed. That means that your direct comparison is completely invalid.

And I'm not even hating on PRIDE. If that's what you're into, fine. Be entertained - that's what it was there for. But don't pretend that the organization was promoting a real sport or that it was the right direction for MMA to go in, because it wasn't. :bart

I know fights are fixed. Never have approved of it, never will. But what I do enjoy is the legitimate fights that PRIDE put on and there were several DOZEN

I understand your criticism of the fixed fights. But if you are going to tar every match with the it wasnt legit brush, then name them
If you want to say there were some fixed fights then fine. If you want to imply that all the fights were fixed, then name them

I was talking about the production and promotion

And you are right. The UFC would never pay a old Pro to take a dive to get a new star over...

I never once said that all the fights were fixed. I said that there was an entirely unacceptable level of all kinds of corrupt bull**** going on in PRIDE.

And I'm talking about the actual fights. You know, the only thing that actually matters. The rest of it is just to raise brand awareness and sell tickets. Once the fighters get in the cage, it's an actual sporting contest.

Nice out-of-context half-second gif. Have you seen that fight in full?

So you cant name them, want me to do it for you? Start with every Takada fight. You fill in the blanks form there, name the fixed fights, and I'll double it with legit one

So Japanese using fireworks and pageantry = Sports Entertainment

UFC using Vince Mcmahon's promo 101 text book = raising brand awareness

And there's plenty of actual sporting contests in PRIDE. So name the fixed fights, I'll name twice as many legit ones

    Deal?

What do you think? Rich had obviously used the Buddist Palm technique from Kung Fu Hustle...doesnt look dodgy one bit...

This is like PM'ing Maracho and telling him there is no God

    1) Once again, I never claimed that all PRIDE matches were fixed, or even close to it. I've been quite clear on that.

    2) Your offer here is like me attempting to show that I'm not that much of a thief because for every occasion you name where I stole something from the supermarket, I can cite two trips where I paid for everything I walked out with. :-(

I don't care what the Japanese did for their promotion. A lot of people really enjoyed the pageantry, good for them. It's not my thing, who cares. Though I do like some of the entrances.

I am talking about the fights themselves. When I say "sports entertainment", I'm not referring to out-of-the-ring ****. That's irrelevant.

I'm referring to referees getting mid-fight instructions from backstage about how to officiate. I'm talking about fights suddenly having an extra round added so that the Japanese fighter has a chacne to win. You know, all that buil**** that shows that the legitimacy of the athletic contest is secondary to the entertainment of the Japanese audience.

Have you got a gif of the next ten seconds of the fight, where Shamrock puts Franklin in real danger of being submitted by an ankle lock?

    1) Put you have been quite emphatic that there were fixed fights in PRIDE, so name them. If you are so emphatic about it, you should be able to name them happily. Right?

2)Ok then, I wont name the legit fights. You can name the fixed fights you keep harping on about. Then we can expose the PRIDE fan boys together

So what did you steal from the Supermarket? I once stole a pack of chewing gums by mistake. I was only 5, my Mother went mental. She slapped me on the ass and I curled up in a heap like Brock Lesnar

You brought it up, you missed my point again, I clarified.

And which fights would that be you are talking about.

    Name some names :good

no sorry, Ive only got a gif of Ken falling over BEFORE the punch connects. Want to see it again?

I always thought that fight was fixed and its not even a good fake job.
Coleman vs Takada even looks real compared to that

At the time many thought it was a 'work'. Ken obviously never admitted that. Ken certainly wasn't trying to pull guard there though was he... So why feign a punch....
