Would professional boxing be better if it were setup as a leauge sport?

The biggest reason boxing has died down in the US is greed.

Back to cable television:
Back to everyone, will bring in more notoreity

Back to one organization:
Too many promoters and belts and boxers duking it out for money

Possible solutions for this:
One belt, tournamet or team model.

One belt - Nuff said

Tournament:
Will make fights happen. Maybe instead of a belt we can have a championship. Similar to Olympic model or World Cup model. Championship every four years and taking fights to qualify and get ranked the other three.

Team model:
A lot of people like baseball, football, basketball because they can identify with them. They share home teams and they have history. They can make teams by city, state, country, etc.,

Capitalizing on image and merchandize:
- With team model they make playing cards, jerseys, compare stats, etc.
- Take note of popular trends right now. People hardly wear everlast, winning, grant, WBC, IBF, Top Rank, Goldenboy clothing and apparel, because it's not up to date with what kids like. Kids like the skull and bones stuff from UFC, bright colors and numbers from jerseys. If the boxing orgs could make jerseys and hats of similar distinction people would buy it.

Yeah that is the downside of MMA is one company running it. I think something more like the NFL, NBA, ect. I dont know enough about tennis or golf or other single player sports to make a comparison on them though. But something like they do I think would be better.

The ABC orgs try to maintain organization with mandatories, rankings and ordering rematches like with Khan-peterson but there are too many of them and they hold no weight. For example, if Peterson were to get a worthwhile offer for a big fight with someone else, it wouldnt mean anything to dump the belt and their rematch order.

Also annoying is ABC rankings that seem to ignore completely belt holders of other organizations. Like say when Chris Byrd had a belt, someone **** like maskev would be ranked #1 challenger while Lewis would not be on their top 10 list because he had a belt by someone else, the #1 guy on WBO's list would not even be on WBC's list ect.

 

Yeah the boxing articles in the paper sucked. If you could even call them articles, there would be a little paragraph on like page 10 of the sports section. I forget the fight, but after one big fight, the next day the boxing coverage was buried somewhere deep and they have ****ing horse racing on the front cover.

 

Agreed, there is no reason for it not to be on prime time TV like football, baseball ect. Once promoters got their hands on it and it went PPV and premium cable, they have too much power and control to let it get back. Its good for them and only the very top fighters but the guys fighting on the under cards all have day jobs. The bench warmers in the NFL and baseball make 6 figures.

That right there at the end is my biggest hang up with boxing. While guys like Mayweather and Pacquiao had some good fights in their early career, they mainly became popular after fighting Delahoya. They haven't been in a lot of exciting fights since. Both have been cherry picking, making boring fights, and raking in though cause of their names.

There have been many more exciting fights such as:
Prescott vs Alvarado
Kirkland vs Angulo
Ortiz vs Berto

And those were just the ones shown on TV, who knows what we have missed.

What I also don't like about the elitism in boxing right now is that it allows popular fighters to avoid good fighters, so we don't know who the best out there are sometimes. I'm willing to say the p4p and belt rankings are skewed as a result.
