When, at 15, he broke training by staying out one night, Joel Sr. came down the street in a ratty bathrobe, exposed himself to the other kids and embarrassed Oscar into going home.

"This is a kid who doesn't have the experience of life," Alcazar says. "He didn't grow up like a normal kid; he don't know what it is to pick up the phone and call his friend to go to the movies, to go to the nightclub, to go drive a car. Why? Because it was from school to boxing, and from boxing to bed." Most fighters have seen too much of the street, but when Oscar gets out in the world, "he's lost," Alcazar says. "He's like a blind person."

    That sounds horrifying.

Signs of that kind of upbringing are why I never hold it against De La Hoya when he comes off as "fake" or awkward in his tone when speaking. He probably means well but doesn't know how to express himself in a way that seems genuine.

Yeah, like he's wired slightly wrong, partly, but not entirely, on account of his dad waving his **** at him.

Its a shame Oscar came out so determined to box against Tito.

It was clear from the outset things were not 100% with Trinidad, and Oscar was a granite-chinned killer at 147.

Had Oscar come out like it was one of his development fights(Leija, Ruelas) and just let it go, he'd have annhilated Tito. First two or three rounds, TKO.

Oh, what could have been. Instead, King pulls off the fix and Tito escapes to greater glory.

Oscar got robbed, there isn't any disputing it. What is sad for him is that he fought in a manner that will give biased fans a reason to forever claim he deserved it. That would haunt me, man.

Interesting and I think Clancy was right, Oscar won that fight, going toe-toe with Trinidad would have played right into Tito's hands and I think Trinidad is the better puncher of the 2 and better in that kind of fight

I don't think Tito was all there that night, though. He looked wooden, almost sickly. Just not all that ready to go.

And while I agree Tito is the better puncher of the two, the better chin is unquestionably Oscar, and he was damn good in a firefight himself.

I don't think Tito looked bad, I think it was Oscar making him look bad with his movement. Tito's chin isn't that bad, despite being down every so often he's only been stopped by Hopkins

Tito's chin isn't awful. Oscar's is just a lot better.

And I think Tito looked weight drained as hell as early as the 2nd round. He usually moves his torso better than that. He was just totally listless. No real fire in him at all. I think he'd have been cowed in a firefight on that night. He just wasn't right.

Man, what was he punching at though? He looked pretty awful against Hopkins also for some of the same reasons. He just wasn't able to fight against a guy who wasn't there.
