Allegedly and DeGale split

Seeing as you used Khan as an example, there's one big difference there - Khan had the platform of terrestrial television to build his name on during the early part of his career. Most of - if not all of - DeGale's televised fights have been on Sky TV. That immediately reduces the potential audience for him to be built as a start to. In regards to exposure that makes a massive difference.

Look at how many folk watched David Price's - an Olympic bronze medalist - last fight compared to the number of folk who watched Tyson Fury's. Folk I work with who don't follow boxing watched the Fury fights as they were on 'council telly'. Only one guy knows who David Price is, and that's down to him watching boxing on Sky.

Well, that's the point.

The kinda money that DeGale et al were given meant that the only way to pay those bills was by appearing on PPV. Obviously you can't have PPV's every month.

I'm not sure what was going through his mind when he signed them, surely you'd offer them a sum reflecting their status, not paying them European championship money to fight scrubs over 6x3's.

They were alright generating the money whilst they had Khan, even though he wasn't a major seller on TV....

You're right about Price/Fury too. I guess it's down to the individual boxer whether they don't mind earning short money until they reach a certain level.

When you're being offered a ridiculous sum to sign, and a ridiculous sum per fight..... would be hard to say ''no, just because I won a medal at tap and run in the Olympics, I'm no different to anyone else. give me £5k per fight....''

Obviously the **** has hit the fan in a big way, setting up BN is perhaps the last move of a desperate man.

If I was Frank, from a financial/business point of view I'd release DeGale, Gavin, Bellew and Mitchell, and re-build with Cleverly, Burns and some young kids.

And leave the 2012 lot alone.

 

To be fair on the class of '08, no promoter had a solid looking relationship with any terrestrial TV channel and Allegedly had a proven track record, so I can see why they did it. If Channel 5 are still happy with Big Mick by the time the Olypmic medals are handed out, I wonder if any of Team GB will sign with him and go for some exposure that way.

It's really early days yet for both boxing on C5 - and for Chris Eubank, Jr's pro career - but I think he's made a smart decision on the long run by signing with Mick. He's on C5 right from the start, and combine that with his surname and he's got more of a chance at becoming well known by the public at large than James DeGale, George Groves or Nathan Cleverly currently do. And that's not me knocking those guys as fighters.

 

I never understood why terrestrial TV strays away from boxing.

It gets greats viewers outside that reality ****.

If channel 5 can have it why not channel 4 or bbc three? Maybe a freeview channel with good advertising behing it!

It's not so much that I question - it's the reported six figure signing on fees, and ~£50k per fight over the first couple of years.

Apparently that was necessary to sign them. Hmm... yeah ok. Terrestrial TV wasn't an option as you say, and we're the only nation in the world to put amateurs on a pedestal in their early pro careers.

I'm sure the amount of cash they've got has contributed to their collective lack of popularity. DeGale offering bets to his opponent, accusing the likes of Haye of not being able to afford him etc etc, and Gavin making a bit of a twat of himself with Woodhouse saying ''I'm giving you more money....'' and stuff like that.

Hopefully it won't happen again, but it probably will.

 

Reality TV is cheaper to produce, and less of the headaches that certain promoters and fighters bring with them. I think boxing and Channel 5 are a good fit though, as they've made an effort over the last few years to strike up a blend of US dramas, documentaries, movies and shitty reality TV. They've picked up whatever sport they can and there are promoters out there with good fighters looking for TV dates. Hopefully it lasts.

 

Quite suprised as there is always talk about people unhappy etc but you never know 100%!

I thought DeGale would be under a tight contract.

For me, this will hurt Box Nation. Frank hasn't got a consistent and stable domestic product line and he isn't getting in a consistent stream of international events. The fights aren't under wraps let alone the production, the website, extra footage etc

 

Is there any chance DeGale can ditch Allegedly as a manager but retain him as a promoter? I ask only because the press release refers to Allegedly as his manager, so wondered if he was still sticking with him as his promoter...

 

I think definitely other channels are going to sit up and take notice of what theyve done on CH5 with **** production.

:deal Hopefully they start making more dates so Mick can entice a few other lads over and have shows with people other than Fury headlining. Itll be great if Fury can be the fighter that brings boxing back to the mainstream

End of the day if you want to be a PPV star your going to need that unbeaten or fairly unbeaten record and some charisma. But to be big on terrestrial youll just need an entertaining style. I guarantee if Fury had lost that fight youd have almost as many tuning in the next time to see his comeback.

 

I agree, I reckon he profits from his ITV4 shows and all the recent interest in 'travellers' that often appear on TV. Fairplay to the lad, Honest kid plying his trade and gives his all.

 

Theres no reason why he can't do that.

Yep, it sounds like that. I was just agreeing that the promoter/ manager roles are seperate and theres no reason why FW can't promote DeGale even though he's being (allegedly) binned as manager.
