Question for Billy.... would you let DeGale go?

Taking into account the well known issues that Frank is having.... and the fact that DeGale's career has stalled?

 

Defo NOT, Please remember James LOST to George Groves at British title level,Question how many people come back after that and go straight to a Euro championship fight! Brilliant bit of management and James should imo remember this.
12 months he should be ready for a world title imo

 

the fact that you can lose and then get a shot at the 'european' title leads me to believe that title is in fact bollocks

 

Titles aren't the be all and end all Billy. Degale needs to be fighting regularly and anyone with half a brain can see he's been regressing in the last year. 3 fights in 2011 for a rank novice like Degale, especially after the loss as well is not enough to keep him progressing. This is the reason people believe that his career has stalled.

 

DeGale beat a guy who wasn't as good as Groves for the Euro - that's pretty much the sum of its worth. James is lucky he a) won that fight, and b) that he's still in a position to be earning money. Plenty of fighters have had to go straight back to the domestic pile.

We don't even know for a fact about the pay issue.

 

Why is it so great to get a Euro shot - then not be paid for it ?

It's a 6-figure debt now.

How you mean Lucky? Lucky to get shot? or Lucky to win cos i'd disagree with the latter. He fought hard to win that fight no matter what people say about his opponent and him being lucky to get European title shot he slugged it out and grinded decision out well IMO.

 

I know Billy himself was awaiting monies.

I can appreciate 'towing the line' on these threads Billy, but we both know it's not cricket - our boys are taking the punches to earn their money. They should be paid accordingly.

 

I think he was lucky to some degree - if the Pole had any real punch there would have been two losses on DeGale's record. He worked hard for the victory, but it was still a very close fight and he shouldn't have been struggling with that calibre of opposition.

Yeah i agree with that, He worked well on inside IIRC but he seemed to lack confidence especially defensively.

I think Degale is a big enough name through the olympics/Groves fight that hed be able to headline a CH5 card.

I think the pole was lucky when Degale caught him and buzzed him, set up to throw a big punch then slipped like many others that night because the canvas was wet. Close but clear fight IMO if the Pole had power is a bad point, its like saying if Malignaggi had power hed be the p4p #1. Although I agree about struggling with that opposition and defensive flaws.

 

No question Degale is talented, good enough to be a world champion but there are hundreds of other factors involved, progression, learning the trade inside out, how your matched and how often you fight. There is tons more, and alot of the guys on here know this..

Thing is, the real worry is if Degale cannot fight for a one year...thats would really harm him.

The lad is 26 and a young 26 at that...so really he has 10 years left in the sport...so this type of time wasting is really what lets boxing down.

We all say this is a weak era for the heavyweights, I dont agree...the real crunch is the way the sport is organised...for example look at the talented Ruslan Chagaev... because there are so many fighters around the world, so many opportunities for so called world title fights, a guy like Ruslan is doing just enough to train and fight never really testing himself, now look at him...a fat 242 and he is what 6ft /6ft1.

If boxing were in anyway geared toward proper competition, then Ruslan would have to fight a top 20 and most likely would get in shape, instead we see another good heavyweight waste away.

The super-middle division is hot, and alot of good fighters are emerging its a shame that Degale is so far behind this. Another thing....he is a prospect and yet has 12 fights in 3 years that just poor.

 

Degale has moved so slowly. An Olympic gold medalist from 2008 should have had 20 fights by now.
