Tyson was the most overhyped fighter of all time, beating some good contenders and a semi retired Larry Holmes does not make you a top 5 or 10 ATG heavyweight IMO. What do u think?
OK, just completely dismiss the top 80's HW contenders who all got demolished like nobody'd ever done before..
Probably, yes he was over-hyped, just like Baer was all those years before him. Not top ten, you could probably argue him at 11-14 I suppose, same as anyone else that isn't Ali or Louis.
If Tyson had the level of opponents that Jeffries, Johnson, Dempsey, Louis, Marciano or even Liston made their collective resumes upon, we would be speaking of him in reverential tones if we would be allowed to utter his name at all.

Difficult to be in Tyson's position and not be overhyped, tuh bee honest.Same thing with Ali. Still,he cleared up the division in the late 80's and did so in devastating fashion.
No, put aside the real overhyped champions for a second like Dempsey and ask how many champions in history cleaned out a division for all practical purposes? There's Tyson, Ali, Louis, Marciano, Lewis and arguably Holmes, Johnson and Liston. Now out of all those divisions I'd contend Tyson's opposition was the second toughest behind Ali If anything vastly underrated, all achievements aside he's probably the most skilled HW champion of all time, top3 quickest HW champion of all time, top3 defensive skills of all time and arguably the best HW Champion puncher of all time (combining power, accuracy and speed)
