Tyson looks great if he's punching the **** out of someone and they don't fight back. He was a bully...just like Sonny Liston. When he fights someone who's not afraid...ala Buster Douglas...Holyfield...etc...then fights over.If Tyson came back into the ring after being knocked out like Dempsey was against Firpo in 1923 and wins...or if he had been pounded...cut...floored..and behind on all score cards like Marciano was against Walcott in 1952..or when Rocky had his nose split open to the BONE like he did against Charles in 1954..and came back to win...then yeah,...he'd be ranked higher...but Tyson NEVER got off the canvas and came back to win a fight.

:deal. Well I see that my sentiments are not wrong, Tyson is indeed the most overrated, overhyped boxer of all time. And all the Tyson nuthuggers itt just proves it

The highlighted is verging on "hater" status.

Tyson is like many, underrated by some, overrated by others, held correctly by still others.

Truth be told the general consensus probably has him close to where he fits.

I'd respectfully categorise you as biased against him. It takes all spectrums to find balance however.

    That is quite the task.

    Best of luck.

As for the thread? For someone overhyped he sure went the extra mile cleaning out the division and unifying the titles.

Have you actually ever seen a tyson fight? I dont think you have. Basically what your trying to say is the 37 guys Tyson beat before Douglas didnt throw a punch?

Tyson was undertrained and he underestimated Douglas and still put Douglas on his ass. I dont think youve ever watched a Tyson fight to be honest, so i dont think you should really be commenting on a Tyson thread.
Sonny Liston was around 40-45 years old when the fought the GOAT in his prime. What was Ali doing when he was 40? What was Holyfield doing at 40?

If Dempsey/Marciano fought Holyfield/Lewis, they would not be getting up thats for sure. Tyson knocks Firpos ass back to Argentina
Lennox never got off the canvas to win either. Suddenly the list looks very slim.
Did Ali ever get up off the canvas to win a fight he was losing? no i dont think he did. Neither did Foreman, nor did Frazier, nor did Holyfield.
Tyson would knock Demspey and Marciano out on the same night.

This is a rather silly and highly circumstantial prerequisite for greatness if you ask me.

It's just as much a testament to his skills, defense and chin that he was rarely ever floored to begin with.

Because 1 out of the first 25 posters agreed with your sentiments?

Your thread's a joke, pal. And it's been thoroughly shitted on.

As somebody who looks at fighters through the lens of history, Tyson is one who has gone up in my estimation.

I used to think along the same lines as his critics, but as a historical anorak, I have to say certsain things in his favour.

Fighters who anihilate the best opposition, are exceptional, however weak the era is. A ranked contender ought to be able to put up some sort of fight, even in a weak era.

Tysons resume is deceptivley strong in terms of depth, despite his lack of longevity. In terms of number of ranked contenders beaten, he ranks prety high relative to other ATGs!

For sure he sghould have done more, but the numbers actualy stack up fairly well in nhis favour.

His lack of longevity is inflated (can you inflate a lack?) He was atop the division as long as Marciano, with more defenses (granted fractured belts), had a far more impressive run at the top than Dempsey (who lengthened his run atop the division by sitting on the title and avoiding the guy best qualified to beat him). If he had had the same length of career as Marciano he would have retired in 1993 with one loss and a bevy of world champs beaten.

No, there were actually numerous counterpoints made, and none any more ridiculous than your OP.

You honestly take Janitor for a Tyson 'dickrider'? :-(

Tyson isn't among my top five heavyweights, personally. Around 7th-8th. Would you classify that as fanboyism?

In terms of longevity, interestingly enough it's something people knock tyson for.

How many hw's can rival his 4 year stint at the top top? How many can rival his 9 defences (every one against an opponent who was at one point a ranked contender or champion? Of those with greater than the 4 year reign and greater than the 9 defences, how many returned 6 years after losing the championship to propel themselves to the top of the division?
