Also he was a bit slim to go all the way up to CW.

Joe wasnt shot, he was near prime at 36 since he had a very very young athletic body but he was going to be shot within two years. To go up to cruiserweight in a meaningful way would have meant more than one fight, which would mean a good year or two and then hes losing his hand speed, his primary weapon.

Gaining even more mass would have meant even less of that prime weapon, and lathough he'd retain his other prime weapon fitness, he'd be ****ed over by natural CWs on points and get knocked over too.

He did enough to considered an excellent speed/endurance fighter anyway, no sense in trying to do an RJJ - Jones was cut from a different mould to be able to do what he did.

He'd worked all his life to stay unbeaten.
He made huge amounts of money in his last few fights.
He could claim to be the greatest 168lb fighter ever, and he held the lineal LHW title.
He had all his faculties intact.

Most of us would of left the game there and then too, don't hate on a man for being smart, and protecting a legacy he'd devoted his life too.

Even though I don't have the highest opinion of Joe's career, I must agree with this. Very good post. If I had dedicated my life to being a boxer, though, I like to believe I would have pushed myself for a more rigorous resume as opposed to, in my opinion of him, trying to protect "the O".

:fire They weren't all easy fights! Admittedly most of the time he fought well below his level of talent.
