Floyd vs Cotto would have been a NO credit win.

If Floyd would have beat Cotto especially in dominating fashion the critics would have said Cotto was shot. The Cotto fight had critics line up saying it was to late and Cotto was shot and not in his prime anymore. Floyd fighting a younger, fresher more popular champ in Canelo is a good move. The fan base is there and the money Floyd likes.

But was more dangerous 2/3 years back, but everyone knows Arum didn't want it.

    If you really rate:

    W Foreman
    W Mayorga
    W Margarito II

Foreman was ranked by everyone somewhere 3-8 in the division and is a good one, even if his KO ratio is equal to that of Paulie. Mayorga was unranked at the weight, not even close to being ranked, and made Cotto go to war to get the old man out of there. Margarito was unranked at the weight, not even close to being ranked, and was fought at a 153 catch-weight insisted on by Cotto.

154 is stacked, but with no one name standing out above the rest. Based on career merit, Cotto is #1. Based on skill, Lara may be #1. Due to his lack of achievements at the weight based on his actual fights at the weight class, I would put Cotto below Alvarez and Dzinziruk.

But we're comparing Cotto and Alvarez, not Cotto now vs. Cotto 2/3 years back.

Not if Alvarez goes on to become a HOF'er.

i disagree. if he fights Canelo he'll get WAY less credit than fighting Cotto. i see Cotto as legit win. he looked good in his last fight and still got it. of course hes not in his prime but neither is floyd. plus he has a 5 year age advantage on floyd. Canelo hasnt proved anything yet and should be forced to fight kirkland before he thinks about floyd

Do the same for Alvarez, and see if he deserves to be ranked ahead of Cotto.

    It's 50-50.

Canelo is younger, bigger, and undefeated...But he's still unproven in many ways. His size and power arguably makes him a more dangerous opponent...But if/when Floyd defeats him critics will still claim that he feasted on another unpolished Mexican brawler.

While critics would have claimed MAC was shot, the fact remains is that Cotto avenged one of his defeats in comprehensive fashion and looked good doing so. He's more accomplished, just as if not even more skilled than Canelo, and appears to have the tools needed to give PBF a tougher evening. Then again, he is still past his absolute best so critics can point to that as a means to diminish the significance of the victory, if they wanted to.

Neither fight is or would have been bad, even though the fight everyone wants is Pac-Mayweather.
