Definitely not. Tyson was dwarfed (at least in stature) by just about anybody he got in the ring with. He was just a little **** comparatively, a pitbull terrier. I recall Ruddock saying after their first fight that he thought Tyson hit a little bit harder, but pretty intense "for his size". This content is protected This content is protected
Ok I know I'm not the best when it comes to spelling and grammer, but why do so many posters use thread tittles in question form when making a statement? No Mike Tyson was not over hyped. He beat the best heavyweights of his day for 4 years. Had he gotten anidmidiet rematch with Douglas. My opinion is that he would have won, and beaten Holyfield before going to prison.
I actually bought this t-shirt from that Bob Pace guy back in '91. Thing still fits. Tyson would have won in a heavyweight version of Hagler-Hearns.
Good for you, man. Hell, '91 was my first live exposure to Tyson. The Ruddock fights. At four, a pretty mesmerizing and terrifying experience altogether. That was my guy, and I didn't choose it anymore than I did my parents or racial backround. :rofl I spent the next four years ravaging through and rewatching any tapes my dad had or would get until Tyson came out of prison. I remember my friends talking some stuff about Michael Jordan and how the Bulls would do that year (went 72-10). I didn't give a flying turd about Michael Jordan. He was a wuss. Tyson was more captivating and was in a man's game and if push came to shove, he'd surely beat the hell out him too (I was 8 ). Looking back on it, the McNeeley fight was a huge ordeal. :smoke
I actually paid to fly over for this fight & my cheque was cashed the ****in day it was called off due to Tyson's rib injury:fire I was laid in bed with a hangover after being out on the **** letting all the peasants know that i was going to be at Caesars ringside when my missis screamed up the stairs that i'd better switch on the telly as the fight was OFF:| Here's the VIP poster for the fight:yep None of that cheap TVKO shite on my wall oh no:hey This content is protected Uploaded with ImageShack.us
:rofl Your stories and recollections are a gold mine, sir. [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=otH7n_rtDEI&feature=youtube_gdata_player"]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=otH7n_rtDEI&feature=youtube_gdata_player[/ame]
After years of casuals raving that he would spark anyone out in 10 seconds, pissed so many people off( much like klittards) in a way. That he tends to get criminaly underrated now. In my eyes he has one of the best resumes in heavywieght history for depth and had the most dominating and devistating run as champion. Plus the guy was on 5.10ft and gets no realcredit for that.
When all was said and done, Tyson did not live up to the hype and expectations. He came nowhere near. People find a thousands reasons to explain it away, but if it was any other fighter the answer would be obvious and uncontensious - he just wasn't good enough to achieve all that the hype-peddling writers and publicists had him down for. But I don't think he was "OVER-hyped". Hype is just a device to bring in customers, maximize profits. And more often than not, esp in the first few years, the customers were more than satisfied with Tyson. He brought a lot of fans, and excitement, and money into the boxing business. So the hype was okay.
Damn dude, you missed out on the live action with Tyson's heyday during the glorious 80's. Thank God for youtube, aye! I was in high school all 4 years Tyson was in the clink. 4 years back then seemed forever. Watching the belts being passed around was quite depressing, knowing this wouldn't have happened if Mike was still fighting. I have my suspicions that Don King set Mike up after hearing Mike was leaving him.
50/50 thats true & i err on the side of caution His court case was a travesty of incompitence that defide believe:yikes
What expectations didn't Tyson live up to? Even though he came nowhere near breaking Marciano's 49-0 or breaking Louis' mark of 25 title defenses Tyson had some pretty amazing feats that were better than most ATGs accomplishments. Calling him the greatest heavyweight of all time doesn't cut it, but calling him the best heavyweight that ever was isn't out of the question. Yes, he was good enough.
No none were printed (I don't think), anyway it would have been will-call pick up at Caesars for the tickets. I'd have liked a ticket as all Kings tickets were works of art:yep I'd weighed in a bloke called Steve Davis of "Championship Travel" from the UK & i was the only person to get a refund, he kept all the $$$$$$$$$ from about 500+ punters who'd allready weighed him in for the 5 day package, he squealed bankrupcy, ****er kept the lot except what i'd paid him. I picked up the posters at Caesars when i went in March 92 for Hearns/Barkley II. I know the programmes are rare as rocking horse ****, most were pulped & the RING i think sold some or gave them away in one of their issue's the following year.
