The Departed and Goodfellas are excellent movies. But they aren't fit to hold The Godfather's jock-strap. The Godfather is a genuinely epic, the only legitimate epic gangster movie. It's farther reaching in scope, more polished technically (which I understand isn't everyone's cup of tea), it's the Sistine Chapel of the genre. Both of the first two parts are easily amongst the greatest films ever made, and two of my personal favourites.

Anyone see "Things To Do In Denver When You're Dead"...?

It's one my favorite of this genre.

Click on this scene below. It's a scene where Jimmy The Saint has to come out of civilian life/retirement to do one more job for his boss, played by Christopher Walken. So, Jimmy goes and rounds up his old crew.

"Pieces" has leprosy and works in a porn theatre. "Critical Bill" works in a funeral parlor....

    Watch this...

:good I agree with you 100%, and I'm apparently arrogant enough to believe it is not a matter for opinion, but like Louis's superiority over Dempsey, a matter of fact :yep

...but this, i'm going to disagree with. It's very very close IMO. If you want to see a study in subtlety, that is even more subtle than Brando's treatment of the Don's character in fact - check out DeNiro playing him after he gets back from murdering the black hand. Sits on the steps with his children, whispers to an infant Micheal whilst Sonny balls in the background - not only is the contradictory character of the two sons summed up as completely in this scene as it was in the whole if I, but the contradiction in the sociopath's true character are played out in front of us without a single note of dischord. The soundtrack helps, the seeming authenticity of the community helps, but most of all it is the merciless light that has gone out of DeNiro's eyes, replaced by warmth and love.

The entire future of one of cinema's most epic characters is decided in those 20 minutes which are literal perfection.

Yes, I thought Elite Squad was very good, high octane.

Unfotunately, you shouldn't have to consciously try to get into it. The perfection of the opening scene should draw you in immediately. :|
