Eubank and Benn spent their primes fighting the most dangerous fighters around. Calzaghe obviously didn't do this at all, he strategized his career beautifully whereas Eubank and Benn were just fighters. Eubank and Benn turned in greater performances/wins than Calzaghe did, but because of Calzaghe's perceived "dominance" (a 9-year stretch knocking over cans in Wales while holding the WBO title only) most people will say Calzaghe.

But IMO the 1990-1 mw Eubank was the best fighter of the three.

Was Calzaghe the 'best' fighter? No. Eubank in his prime threw dazzling combinations, too, and the flashiest of flurries, but Eubank could also ****ing turn his fist/glove over into a punch and twitch his ankles instead of just slapping with the arms... and unlike big Joe, he could slip a right hand. Come on.

    Interesting
Jones beaten by Calzaghe and ducked Benn and Eubank
    Hopkins beaten by Calzaghe
    Toney ducked Eubank and Benn

I'd refine that statement to say Calzaghe is EASILY the most accomplished at SMW of the three. But in terms of best thats far from the answer, though Cal certainly had the greatest longevity.

Its touch and go who would win a Super Three Tournie between them, no way any of them stands above the others at all. Eubank probably edges it in talent but then he never shined as fully as Joe Cal, who maximised his career success. Benn on his day was a wild card who could KO anyone, but often it wasnt his day.

Calzaghe's dominance over the SMW ranks and his undefeated record make him the "greatest" of them but I enjoyed watching Eubank and Benn fight a helluva lot more and they fought much stiffer competition. They were Warriors of the highest degree. I like Joe, though and he has earned his place in Boxing history.

a lot depends on how you define great. Sven Otkke had a career as 'great' as Calzaghe's but theres noone outside Germany who would call him a great, in fact hes seen as a bit of a joke who would have got clean KOed by all three of Bennie, Eubie and Cal.

There was clearly some sparkle and shine missing from Calzaghe for 95% of his career, when you compare him to a Eubank or a Benn.

When Benn and Eubank fought it was a new division and most boxers did not respect it and often either skipped it or just used it as a skipping stone between MW and LHW. It was almost entirely a UK division.

Today it is a respected and global division with competition from around the world.

Calzaghe would beat both Benn and Eubank.
