Interesting that Henry, despite his contender status for years and that left hook, never fought outside of Europe his entire career. I've heard a circa 64-65 bout was in the works at Toronto's Maple Leaf Gardens but it fell through for some odd reason. How do you see this one going? Obviously Henry's not going to KO George and a cuts stoppage is a very remote possibility. IMO we need to ask...does Henry show up in shape? Can he weather the occasional bomb that George might land, the ongoing body attack, and still be crisp enough in rounds 8-9-10 or 10-11-12 to cop a decision?
Even though both were about the same level I think henry would have boxed chuvalo's ears off. I am not saying chuvalo was not strong or not dangerous but cooper outboxed fighters like chuvalo. alex miteff was as good as george chuvalo. Alex was a big capable mauler who didnt get quite the breaks he deserved on the road. george fought miteff twice in his home town and drew then got a SD, clearly both fights were disputed. Either side of those close bouts with chuvalo cooper soundly outboxed metiff, even if he had to get off the floor in the last round to get the win. Dick richardson, Brian London, jose urtain and wayne bethea were all world rated, stong physical types when cooper beat them. Cooper had no problem with big swarmers of chuvalos level. Remember chuvalo lost to neat boxers like folley, Erskine and bob baker. In 1966 Chuvalo even lost to the argentine eduardo corletti who had drew with the same billy walker cooper outclassed.
I grew up reading RING AJ TREE british commonwealth ratings for years. I often wondered why Canadas Chuvalo never got a shot at title? I think George would have cut up ol Enery & stopped him in 8!!!!:bbb
There was always that chance, cooper did bleed. however, cooper beating miteff proves something and If radmacher and corletti could get past chuvalo I am prety sure a cut free cooper could.
Cooper mentions in his autobiography that at one point there was talk of him defending the Commonwealth title against Chuvalo. With disarming honesty he explains that it didn't happen because "we could stay at home and get easier fights for more money."
1 reason why he never fough chuvalo was his team said henry wasn't built to fight a brawler like chuvalo
Was thinking about this matchup today and happy to have found this old thread to revive. I think this would have been a great fight with a ton of entertainment. I will Chuvalo by stoppage in the mid to late rounds. Too big and physical for Cooper in my book. Choklab, though I get your point regarding Miteff being a real physical fighter, I personally think that Chuvalo was a better overall fighter than Miteff, and would be too much for Cooper.
There's no way that Cooper would have been able to fend off the relentlessly rough, physically aggressive body punching abuse that Chuvalo would be dishing out. That imprecise, clubbing, mauling style would be too much for good ol' Enery , who would indeed have inflicted his share of punishment on Chuvalo....but Cooper did not, IMO, possess the physical strength or the stamina to be able to persevere against the Canadian, who would have reminded everyone why there wasn't much you could do to deter Chuvalo, unless your last name was Frazier or Foreman.
No Wicks had quite a few no, no’s for Coop. Ones that spring to mind are DeJohn, Machen, Liston and Patterson(‘59 pre Ingo slot) He only took the ‘66 Patterson fight, as he thought Floyd was ready to be taken, following defeat by Ali and back trouble incurred.
