This is true, fighters need to look out after themselves. Theyre not exactly making top dollars. Sure its not good for the fans and the sport in general. But if MMA does fade into oblivion, at least the fighters made their money. Remember that athletes never cared about the fans when Sports became big business. Now as a fan, its up to you if you want to keep supporting them or not. For me I still enjoy MMA and truth be told, Ive been suckered far worse with other things. Bottom line, Condit outfought and outsmarted Diaz.
Diaz was exposed as not having much of a plan B. I still think he's a superb fighter and a top 5 ww, but if he's going to become a champion he must be more prepared for this type of run-and-flick points-based-gameplan, because sadly this will happen more and more in MMA in future.
i said a few months back it's the new version of lay and prey i just don't have a fancy name for it yet
The reactions of the majority of fans on this thread and on this forum ensure that this type of fight will happen more and more and more in future. I hope they enjoy the sport they're helping to create. :good Duck N Flick? Run N Tap?
The only kind of fight Condit was ever going to be able to stop Diaz in, was the type of fight he fought last night. Diaz overwhelms everyone that stands in front of him. You saw what happened the one time Condit let his back hit the cage, and he didn't immediately go back to the center of the cage. Diaz hit him with 6 or 8 body shots. Condit was attacking Diaz lead leg the entire fight, tried to land knees and elbows on the angles created, and out landed Diaz in total strikes. I'm sure Condit wanted one of those shots to get Diaz out of there. Sometimes you can't finish your opponent in time given. His plan was working, too. Diaz was the fighter that was tiring in rounds 3 and 4. Diaz was continuing to tire in the 5th, as well. The reason Condit lost the 5th, on my card, was because of one technical mistake. Condit gave Diaz his back.
MMA has peaked in my opinion. Fights like Gsp/Sheilds, Last night Main event certainly doesnt help. But like I said, fighters doesnt care about the fans. Its called Sports entertainment. Theres a few guys out there that provides that. Wand, BJ, Nick are a few of them. Wand actually profess to wanting to please the fans. One thing is true, more ME like last night and Dana wont be happy.
I'll re-post points I've been making already, as they are my response: If Carlos Condit had turned Nick Diaz, went at him aggressively, eventually been fought off by Nick, and been unable to get close to finish him, I'd have no complaint. But his leg-kick-run-pivot-run-engage-as-little-as-possible tactics were clearly designed for a safety-first points decision. To me, this is a fighter who has sold out the principles of fighting, and it's happening too often these days, and everyone applauds.
Because its a stupid argument. Yes defensive, hit and run striking can be boring. No one is arguing that. And anyone that think it's a new thing then boy oh boy you must be some idiot noob who's never watched combat sports before. But what Condit was trying to do was not avoid engaging with Diaz in the middle of the Octagon. He was trying to avoid Diaz trapping up against the cage. That's perfectly legitimate to do. He was no limiting himself to petty punches and 'baby' kics but throwing genuine power strikes that if they had of connected cleanly could easily have set up the finish. It was a close fight against two great fighters. Diaz was nowhere near as aggressive or fluid as he has been against lesser fighters. Condit was nowhere near as aggressive or fluid as he has been against lesser fighters. That's not because Diaz is stupid or Condit is a coward, its because when two great fighters compete often they cancel each other out. Its a lot easier to look impressive against a shot BJ Penn or Dan Hardy than its a genuine top five welterweight. And I find it particularly funny the idea that Diaz fans are bemoaning another fighter not going for the knockout when Nick's WHOLE STYLE is based on not throwing full-force punches and instead wearing down his opponents, chipping away at their energy reserves before he can get either a decisions or late finish.
I'm not even that fussed about the fans primarily, it's more about the intention of the fighter and the gameplan he uses, the basis behind his approach. Greg Jackson clearly hatched a plan for Condit to run, legkick, move, flick out points-scoring shots, run the clock down, engage as little as possible, and win a decision. I don't think fighters should be going out with a gameplan like this, it's turning MMA into fencing or something, amateur boxing. I won't say any more as I've said it all already on this thread.
We're all just going round in circles now. I'll just re-post again, I have already said succinctly what I have to say: If Carlos Condit had turned Nick Diaz, went at him aggressively, eventually been fought off by Nick, and been unable to get close to finish him, I'd have no complaint. But his leg-kick-run-pivot-run-engage-as-little-as-possible tactics were clearly designed for a safety-first points decision. To me, this is a fighter who has sold out the principles of fighting, and it's happening too often these days, and everyone applauds.
Wow Condit 'sold out' did he? That's mighty big of you to say from the comfort of your armchair. How about instead of carping you put these fighting principles you find so easy to talk about into practice?
