Was in a gym in LA long time back, this little Korean kid needed a sparring partner, I was waiting on my bro so I figured what the hell I'll give this little ****** a lesson or two. He was so small and by his appearance I thought I would destroy him. Little did I know this kid had some serious skills, he kicked my ass, bad. Didn't matter what i did, he bested me every time. Physically I was beat down, but my ego took the worst of it. Never judge a book by its cover, lesson learned...
Whats yours garfield? prob one of my first. broke my nose, and just wanted to be anywhere but the ring.
I sparred this lightheavyweight dude, I was around 150/160 back then, dude looked slow as hell and goofy, so I started to go all pernell whitaker on him. I thought it would be fun turns out the guy hated it and out of nowhere he graps my neck and landed 4 foreman bodyshot, thought my ribs broke, couldnt breath for one min. That was humiliating.
(I'm curious about what percentage of this forum have actually sparred) My very first one, I was always getting in trouble and school and fighting etc so my Dad took me to a Boxing club to burn some energy and have me learn some discipline. I only did the drills the first week, and it was fun; obviously bags don't hit back and it was only a kids class so the pace was less than what I got used to in later years. The second week, I was allowed to Spar. This was the bit I'd been looking forward too. 'Fighting.' When we started I actually got intimidated, I was new and this kid had Boxed atleast a few weeks more than me, so I did what I now see 90% of the kids who I teach do when they first spar, forget to breathe. I also got tired very quick, the gloves on my hands became like bricks and the first time the other kid opened up and threw a flurry of punches which I didn't know how to block, I panicked and turned my back. (You get mocked for that in a gym!) I got through it barely, and needed alot of encouragment to go back next week!
Sparring with a pro, he has a horrible record but **** he hit like a mule. Khalik Memminger.. I was praying that the bell would ring for it to be over.. it was in survival mode the whole time
I guess because sparring is an aspect of training as opposed to general boxing talk. More liklihood of people coming in here to discuss sparring.
Had to go through to a different gym for sparring one day, and one of guys at the gym was this real cocky boxer, who had beentalking **** to me afew weeks earlier, so I was all up for giving him a doing. Thing is I sparred absolutly crap the whole night and the **** outboxed me, dont know what happened to me, had no timing or anything, just one of them days. I was annoyed like
I have two. One was the first time I ever sparred. Naturally I got roughed up but think I did a pretty good account of myself overall. The worst part about it was just the feeling like my heart was going to explode when it was all over. I'd never pushed myself so hard physically before and it didn't help that it was a 90+ degree day and humid as hell (my gym had no AC, so it was the same conditions inside). The next worst part was when I ate a hook to the side of my head and my peripheral vision went blurry. Never been hit like that before or since, though I recovered. The other was this past summer, sparring a guy much smaller than me (I'm SHW, he's about 165). He's also the best boxer at the gym and I was feeling sluggish that day. He just wrecked my ****, was simply too fast. The worst of it was the body shots. He landed six, seven, eight clean body shots right to the liver. We sparred at like 7PM; my chest still hurt at like 2-3AM when I finally got to sleep. I was considering going to the hospital or something for a while because of how hard it was to breathe even hours later.
