Nonito is defiinitely on the radar for the next big thing. He is scaling the weightclasses right now and plans to unify the superbantam division. What do you think Donaire needs to improve his game? I think he needs to work more in his combination punching. In the Vasquez fight,Donaire was getting hit too much not because his defense is poor but because he wanted to make Vasquez gain more confidence. If Donaire wanted to, he could have played it safe like the Concepcion fight but he did not probably because he didn't want another Narvaez borefest. And so throughout the fight he was baiting Vasquez so he could unleash his fight ender left hook. Problem is Vasquez was cautious and was content on landing jabs. So the burden is on Donaire to make the fight exciting.Problem is,he is a counterpuncher and the flavor of the fight heavily relies on his opponent. So my advise to him if he wants to become a superstar someday and of course a more complete fighter, fire those combos dude! And fire them in the beginning rounds.I notice that if the first round is exciting, the tension carries through the whole fight.Must be some audience psychology or something..so Yeah Good luck Flash.
Can't really think of anything for him to improve on. His game is solid. Maybe he should visit the body a little more often, to bring the guard down of an overly defensive opponent. And perhaps find a better way of dealing with straight rights. He carries his left hand really low, and despite it allowing him to counter the way he does, he gets easily tagged when his reflexes and footwork aren't quick enough to move him out of the way.
Ive edited my points. Not just the jabs, but straights rights also got through because of that low left hand. An intelligent attacker, like Vasquez was being that night, would have a lot of success against him.
This one.. And I noticed that on the first 4 rounds Vasquez was doing the same thing Narvaez did, using tight guard and occasional jabs.. Until Vasquez got the confidence booster when he got a nice straight right.. But for the rest of the fight, he was dominated by Donaire.. I wonder what's next for him.. :smoke
I'd say his defense. He relies too much on his reflexes and athleticism. He needs to put that guard up... :bbb
I don't think Donaire can be elite over 126, where I believe he will probably get stopped at one point, he should stay at 122 for a few years, then try 126, but not go over 126. I think Donaire should improve his injured hand as soon as possible, so he can get inside the ring vs Nishioka .
He was taking one to give a better one, can't knock him for actually trying to put on a good show. Vasquez was fighting safe, didn't want to open up. I have no doubt Donaire could pot shot, score points, get out with a easy UD, but he goes in trying to knock people out. Give the guy some credit, he's trying to give people what they paid for, give Vasquez some credit. I refuse to believe its possible for anyone other than a world class trainer to give advice on where Donaire can/should improve. If it wasn't for his "imperfections," he wouldn't be the same fighter. Like Martinez, the guy relies on showboating (at times anyway), to lull the opponent into throwing something at him, therefore leaving them open to a counter. Donaire has the athletic ability to adapt such a style and has proven he can use it to devestating effect. Lets say for example, he were to adapt a more defensive style by keeping his hands up at all times. We can only speculate that his hands would not be in as good a position to fire back with a powerful counter. The key here is to acknowledge that we don't know what these little adjustments would have on his overall game, they could very well serve as a hinderence. Personally, I believe that it's near on impossible for a fighter at this stage in his career to make any stylistic changes. They are too set in their natural way of fighting (having adopted it throughout their entire professional career). The time for change was back in the amateurs. The only thing Donaire can do is maintain a professional work ethic and fight the right people in order to cement his legacy.
