Here is Harry and the Toy Bulldog ,signing the contracts for their barn -burning scrap, followed by previously posted footage of Harry posing for the camera. I hadn't seen the signing before, so I thought it might be of interest. It looks like a good site with some decent material on it. http://www.archive.org/details/HarryGrebNewsreel
Great stuff McVey, haven't seen all that before. Something about those old newsreels, haunting. It's like watching an old cinefilm seeing them outside the ring.
greb don't look massivley co-ordinated or balanced, is this fair? and what sort of defence did he employ?
Wonderful stuff M. I have a copy of the original film, given to me by the guy that found it in a College Archives. Two originals Harry Greb and Mickey Walker.! This clip was filmed on the roof of Philadelphia Jack O'Briens Gym on Bwy NY. Historic moment for O'Brien who was kod by the great Stanley Ketchel in 1909,and help train Harry Greb for his bout with Mickey Walker in 1925. Greb was fading by this time and had to run around Central Park TWICE to make the 160 pound weight, drinking only orange juice punch. Surprisingly Harry came into the bout at 158 lbs, weakened but ready...Cheers M :hi:
K, Greb unused to having a camera thrust in his face, was playing with a 55 year old Phil Jack O'Brien. Greb's true fighting style was a rainstorm of punches from every angle-non stop. What would anyone do with a 55 year old trainer ? But watch Greb bouncing around to and froe while he was playing handball and not posing uncomfortably for a new thing for him. A camera...
thankyou for responding burt. i see your point, when he is skipping his eyes are stuck on the camera. still, i skip better than that and i am not a pro boxer, but i suppose greb wasn't a pro skipper, and no one doubts his fighting.
Greb's movement on the handball court was probably indicative of his true athletic ability. Could hit the ball with both hands....and was quick on his feet.
Interesting to see how Walker "chewed gum"....and that he appeared "cocky". But..both guys acted very professional.
Strange that no Greb film has ever surfaced. The Walker fight,[ 1925] was filmed, as was the rest of the card. It was a benefit for the Italian Hospital, held at the Polo Grounds, the support bouts included Harry Wills v Charlie Weinert Jimmy Slattery v Dave Shade
