Cotto hasn't been a heavy puncher outside of 140, at 154 this is the guy who struggled to take out a 1 legged Yuri Foreman. I'd say the Ortiz Mayweather fought would destroy Cotto in 4 or 5.
That is how little I think of Cotto now. I see nothing that Cotto brings at 154 that could deal with Ortiz.
He brings power, movement and skill. Cotto would destroy Ortiz at 154 it won't even be funny. Cotto can box if needed and exchange if needed too and that has been proven. Has Ortiz done anything at 154?, he barely did much in his own weight division to do anything at 154.
He doesn't have legit power at 154, IMO. His movement is over rated, because a lot of the time he moves for no reason, and he has skill, but again to me it seems as if he doesn't put himself in the proper strategy to use it to its fullest extent. At 154 you have an Ortiz who is going to be bigger, faster, quicker, and can bring pressure to him, that he hates, and beat him fighting on the inside. I'd say Ortiz fight at 147 showed me he would have what it takes to fight Cotto at this point in his career, especially with how bad Cotto's strategy, stamina, and defense was in teh Margo 2 match.
Hernandez was on his last legs and weight-drained to boot. He even told Larry Merchant before the fight he'd be lucky to win. And Castillo wasn't highly regarded when Floyd initially faced him. Matter of fact, it's even mentioned during the fight that he had been targeted by Mayweather because they felt it was the easiest route to a title in the new division. Corrales, on the other hand, was a good scalp.
the very best cotto you ever seen would not beat the 2005 oscar that fought floyd at 154. he would have a 50/50 fight with jmm at his very best. at his very best it's a 50/50 fight between him and ortiz. mosley almost stopped him and maybe he did better against judah. but judah was on a game when he fought floyd. the answer to the question is helll nooooo. cotto is not the best fighter floyd has faced, not even on paper.
Cotto's biggest issue is against active aggressive fighters that can handle his power and keep the pressure on nonstop. Those type of fighters have the best chance to break Cotto down, though it won't be easy and never have been easy, Cotto has proven he is durable and can hang in there for as long as possible. I don't think Ortiz will be able to overwhelm Cotto the way Pacquiao did with a single punch knockdown. He might hurt/stun him but Cotto always fires back and I think it has been proven that Ortiz, like Cotto, can be dropped/hurt from single power shots. So this makes it an interesting competitive fight at best. I don't think either fighter will be blown away in 4 or 5 rounds. Ortiz has been blown away in 4 rounds before, Cotto has never been and not even close and he fought far better opposition than Ortiz. With all that said, we don't really know how Ortiz will perform at 154, if he's getting hurt/dropped by Jr. Welterweights and Welterweights, then 154 could spell doom for him.
Floyd fought Oscar in 2007, not 2005. And that 2007 version Floyd fought was more similar to the 2008 version who looked pedestrian against Steve Forbes, than the one who starched Mayorga in 2006. Marquez recently said he thinks Cotto is "too big" for him. Can't say that I agree. When was this?
Mosley hurt Cotto, he never "almost" stopped him and not even close. Watch that 10th round again. Cotto isn't easy to stop as proven already, he always fires back and Mosley wasn't exactly active enough back then to keep the punches going especially in a late round like the 10th.
the answer is still no but i just watched this highlight and cotto is a way better boxer then mosley at this point. i still think if shane would have stepped up the pace when mosly hurt him he could have stopped him. cotto was firing back but it was those get away from me punches. shane could have ate them alla kirkland and blasted cotto out of there. i seen shane do it before, but that was way back then so he's done. yall are all sleeping on Cotto like hes a bum. he only lost to Pac and Cheato. Floyd is not aggressive like both those fighters. Cotto is probably up there in comp for Floyd. I would say top 3 easy.
