Spinks Vs Jones Jr

Thing is, at Lh we never saw Jones tested by a really good fighter. In the two divisions below certainly but at lh? If he'd been fighting in the 70's-80's period he'd have beaten the most of them but imo would've picked up a defeat somewhere along the line. I'd pick him over Qawi, Conteh, Galindez,Mathew Saad, Eddie Mustapha but I suspect Spinks would be a stumbling block.
Also I feel Jones was a little on the small side for a LH, but this never became a huge factor because he never fought anyone remotely as talented at LH as the fighters I mentioned previously.

 

And the Aussie social cringe (brought on by a deep seated inferiority complex) continues.

 

We also never saw Monzon fighting ATG middle, Foster vs ATG lht heavy or Whitaker vs ATG lightweight.

Does this means you can't pick any of them to win against some other great fighters who beat ATG fighters in their respective divisions?

 

No. That would be stupid. Just something to bear in mind. Jones opponents at LH were fairly poor imo.Spinks never beat a true atg at lh but rather a series of excellent ones. If you read my earlier post however you'll notice I did pick Jones as likely to beat a whole raft of excellent fighters from the 70s and 80s. Also only a fool wouldn't have Jones as at least a dangerous underdog. Its just that I rate Spinks as a narrow favourite in this fight.

 

And I responded by qualifying that level of competition that to me has a very poor list of fighters.

 

Monzon defeated a prime Valdez and Briscoe ... both were light years ahead of anyone Jones fought at light heavy ...

 

I openly question it.

 

A prime Saad, Mustafa or Qwai would have thrashed Jones at 175.

 

Jones overrated at light heavy.needs someone to fight at his own pace too much, undersized and never willing to really go all out, which i feel he would need to do against the better fighters in the division.

I much prefer him at 160 as a head to head force.

 

Valdez wasn't prime.

Briscoe is an extremely tough, good contender, nothing more.

Tarver - beat him in a war first time when drained/weakened/old

Virgil Hill - long reigning champ coming off a competitive loss

Del Valle - undefeated bar his controversial defeat to Hill

Reggie Johnson - MW and LHW titlist, arguably unbeaten bar the Jones loss with contests against Tarver, Toney, Gonzalez

Harding - undefeated with wins over Tarver and Griffin

McCallum - 39yo ATG coming off a recent loss and past his best

Gonzalez - beat Darius and Glen Johnson

Woods - future champ with wins over Gonzalez and Glen Johnson

Hall/Telesco - big punchers and big LHWs but ultimately limited

Not the greatest comp ever but ability wise they are pretty decent level, they just didn't get hyped up as great fighters and didn't have round robin tournaments to capture the public imagination. Some of those wins are better in retrospect too. Most of them completely dominated, the only ones who could be competitive were the better technicians in Harding, Griffin and Tarver past prime. Other technicians like Hill and Mccallum had little success. The punchers like Hall, Telesco and Sosa were just dominated

 

I disagree. All three legitimate threats though. A lot depends on what version of Mustaffa turns up, Qawi is possibly a little too slow (though I can see him nailing Jones with a counter right) and too be perfectly honest I'll need to watch a little bit more of Saad.
