Ken Norton verus Joe Louis' opposition...

How was anything that Galento did better? Moorer and Holy were undefeated top fighters in their primes, one of whom was the current champ while the other was perhaps two years away from taking the crown himself, and he decked them both. Galento beating the number one contender shortly after the Louis fight would have been a great feat, had it not been for this quote:

"..One of the most disgraceful fights staged since the days of the barroom brawls. Referee George Blake..would have retained his reputation as a great referee had he disqualified Galento."

 

Galento fought his way in to the number 1 spot to get a shot at Louis.
Bert Cooper got a lucky phone call.

Like I've said, not all the writers shared those sentiments at all.
You're going to throw out a win based on one writer's opinion ?

 

I'm not saying he beat a legion of prime 'live' world beaters.
But he beat some decent fighters, and often in very convincing and devastating fashion.
He beat Ettore and Mann as severely as Joe Louis did.
He impressed with his punching.

 

All you seem to know is boxrec though.

I'm not even disrespecting Cooper's record, I just think Galento's was better. You seem to be straining to call everything Galento achieved into question ...

None of Galento's fights were clean.
Lots of reports praised his courage and endurance and punching in the Nova fight. He took a fair few knocks himself.

No different than what you or any other poster here does when dissecting fantasy matchups... And as far as Galento goes, I am only observing what I can clearly see on the surface.

Cooper rocked Holyfield and made him grab a rope. Galento decked Louis. Fair enough trade.

As far H2H Cooper vs. Galento. It would be a brawl of course. Both men could hit, but my money would be on the fighter would take as much as he dished out.

Cooper's only good wins Joe Hipp and when Norris twisted his knee. Cooper was a career gate keeper, Galento was a real contender for a few years.

 

We don't need a wasted thread in which most would clearly (rightfully so) pick Norton.

 

Hyperbole doesn't impress me. Galento is a dirty, durable, puncher with inconsistent training habits. Fits in nicely with Ray Mercer, David Tua, and other 90s contenders and near men.

-Fantastic ramblings? Galento not touching Norton 9 out of 10 fights is cosmic hyperbole of the highest order.

How do you really see this fight going down than? Norton slipping and jiving, sticking and moving..or Galento just collapsing because he sucks so bad in your opinion.

 

Galento beat some feared fighters of the day Lorenzo Pack who stopped Leroy Haynes, Eddie Blunt who KO'd Jack Trammel and later on Al gainer and Abe Simon, Tony Musto and Buddy Baer...Galento was on a nice run just before the Louis fight...Burt Cooper was a decent front runner but he quit when the going got tough...I think Galento chases him out of the ring

 

Do you understand how the bum of the month club works?

If Louis beats you, then you are in the bum of the month club.

If you give him a competitive fight in the first encounter, but get knocked out in the second, then you are in the bum of the month club.

You prety much end up in the club, if it is your misfortune to get your title shot against Louis.

Louis did not alow anybody to become a Ken Norton, and he would not alow Ken Norton to be one either!
