Lewis knew he had lost a step, he had lots of problems in training for the Vitali fight, especially with sparring.

Lewis walked away from the sport at the right time & deserves respect for doing what so many other great champions fail to do, leave the game healthy & wealthy.

Many fail to answer the question.

Did Lewis promise a rematch? And did he walk away from that promise?

It was smart, Lewis didn't need 15 million more dollars and still dont to this day, by retiring he avoided a possible loss that he would not have been able to later revenge like his first 2 losses, by avoiding this his legacy looks much better today.

I really think Lewis would have lost a rematch, but lets be fair Lewis was far from prime, at prime he would beat Vitali most days (not saying always as Lewis could get KO'ed).

A lot of people have trouble distinguishing the subjective from the objective.

    Here:

"I want the rematch," Lewis said, speaking to the media on a conference call from New York. "I enjoyed that fight. It was just a fight. We went at it. You have to play dollars and cents but I'm opting more for the rematch."

"I'm just going to give it to him from round one," Lewis said. "He definitely won't get as many shots in. He's going to get knocked out. I would say in the fifth round."

Did he promise a rematch? Not sure, but he did lie about wanting it.

I don't think retiring after Vitali became his mandatory and he was about to be stripped of his belts helps his legacy...well...maybe in France.

When Vitali was calling Lewis out on keeping his promise for a rematch, Lewis never seemed to refute the fact that he did promise a rematch.

    Not that I heard, anyway.
