Ken Norton verus Joe Louis' opposition...

Magoo, that is what gate keepers do. They are brought in to lose to hot names and upcomers for quick paydays. Hollow argument. Of course Cooper faced more top fighters than anybody in the 90s...save Tyson, he fought them all! And lost to them all. Such is the way of the gate keeper. Cooper got into that mess because he was a failed cruiser prospect that lost and/or quit to the types of stepping stone guys, Galento was blowing out in the opening rounds.

By on the flip side do you think Mercer is having more success against Joe Louis, and game versions of the Brothers Baer? Does Mercer upset Nova? Cooper would have been a stepping stone for the prospects, Galento made a career shockingly dispatching of.

And there's probably no way Mercer is rocking and dropping Joe Louis. We can't base this off particular sucess in individual match ups.

Again, I think Galento fits in nicely with Mercer and Tua. Inconsistent training, dangerous, durable...in a very general way..about same level of limited contender.

Yeah, almost everyone at the time thought losing to Norton was the nail in the coffin of Ali's career, because Norton was such an otherwise unremarkable fighter. His claim to fame before that was being Frazier's sparring partner.
And to be honest, he didn't do a hell of a lot afterwards, outside of troubling Ali.

The idea that he was awesome and a clear level above everyone who challenged for Joe Louis's crown is based on nothing more than bias in favour of the 1970s era.

I've never been a big fan of the 'eye test' myself.
I don't go simply on who has the prettiest style or the sexiest abs.

 

I don't dispute that Norton would beat Galento in a modeling contest.

However, we are discussing how a fight between them would turn out.

 

So what are you saying that Tony DOES do better against that group of fighters, or that he finishes with the same results? Reversing the argument by asking how Mercer does against Louis or the Baers doesn't answer the question, especially given that Mercer wasn't even the fighter in question.

 

How do you know? Several men dropped Louis who weren't supposed to.. Scoring a single knockdown in a fight against one top rater isn't particularly unique.. Cooper floored more than one champion in their prime, while Mercer gave absolute fits to a peak Lewis over 10 rounds.

 

One performence that you would have to give Galento credit for (subject to the circumstances), is his win over Lou Nova.

That is one fighter right there who might well have beaten Norton, Shavers and Cooney.

If you do not think that the circumstances render this result void, then it is a verry impresive win.
