I should be numb to this by now. But it always cracks me up.

 

More like Aaron Pryor on Cassius Clay legs with Sugar Ray Leonard speed. He windmilled his punches from weird angles, bouncing in and out, dancing around like Clay, then tearing in again. He kept you on the defensive continuously.

You can't liken him to any fighter really. Definitely nothing like Dempsey or Calzaghe.

 

every single description of him sounds like Calzaghe. Unorthodox, swarming punches and darting movement.

Surf, if your excellent post cannot convince Greb naysayers about Harry Greb's unique greatness, then nothing else can. Great stuff...

Cute th, but wrong. Harry Greb was christened Greb, by his German father Pius...P.S. Greb,in front of a new fangled camera was playing around with his 55 year old trainer Phil Jack O'Brien on the roof of the gym that O'Brien owned in 1925, just BEFORE Harry Greb fading as a fighter, dealt a 15 round whipping to the great prime Mickey Walker... Think man...cheers...

 

I agree .. stronger with a better shin but Calzeghe is the model ..

Can I see a Les Darcy " losing to a TOUGH southpaw Tiger Flowers ? YES if Les Darcy had 275 fights, fighting with ONE Eye at the age of 31 years old as Harry Greb was in his controversial loss to Flowers in 1926. Do you think that a fading 31 year old Les Darcy with almost 300 bouts against anyone and everyone ,would beat a great southpaw as Tiger Flowers , well good luck to you....
I have the greatest admiration for Les Darcy AND Dave Sands, but no MW
kos a prime Greb, and no MW, LANDS more punches than the mature Harry Greb...His like we will never see again...

 

Honestly, for the most part, I'd say it wouldn't be crazy to imagine those descriptions with Calzaghe's name to them. He was obviously of a much, much less proven level, but the styles comparison is a fair one.

 

Greb seems rather crude and volume-based from the descriptions of those quotes. That's why Calzaghe seems to be the most relatable comparison. I seriously doubt the mythology would match the impressions people have of this guy regardless of how great he was. I'm not doubting his greatness, just the aesthetics or masterfulness of it. He seems more unconventional and endless in stamina than anything else. At that time-- hell at any time that would be difficult to cope with. I doubt Greb would look half as beautiful on film than Gene Tunney...

 

I agree.

He sounds incredibly effective, but I doubt on film he would have looked all the much prettier than Calzaghe.
