You might find yourself getting drowned in "Chocolate" by a few hundred Classic posters for asking this. More than one poster has cited Canzi-Chocolate I as their favorite match on film of all time.

Almost exactly two years later, Canzi and Chocolate returned to MSG to do battle again. With Arthur Donovan officiating, Tony did something nobody else had ever managed to do to the Kid in nearly 100 fights: he took him out, and in just two rounds. In 152 career bouts, Chocolate was only stopped twice, and just this once was it by clean knockout.

Yes, I think Canzi could very well be a P4P top ten. His quick knockouts of Berg and Chocolate are monstrous, and his masterful win over the youthful Ambers while in obvious decline raises some serious questions about Canzi versus Armstrong in a best for best matchup. His May 1936 win over a seven pounds heavier McLarnin has been seen by most of us. That was over nine years after he drew with Bud Taylor for the vacant bantamweight title. He was capable of beating the very best over the span of a decade, impressive longevity for a competitor of his size and activity level. His matches with the significantly larger Barney Ross were losses by MD and SD, the second of which might have been decided by the penalization of three rounds from Canzi by low blows. Based on their head to head virtual standstills, a case might be made that the slightly older and smaller Canzi was superior to Barney on a P4P best for best basis.

Canzi is a completely worthy and appropriate charter member of the IBHOF.

What would you guys say to someone who ranked Moore and Canzoneri side by side, i.e. on the exact same level?

 

I would say I can agree with....

 

I've got Archie about 3 or 4 spots higher, so nothing wrong with that.

I like his fight with Bummy Davis. The Waap got ****ing knocked out cold.

 

He'd barely squeak in my top 10 if I only knew him , McLarnin , Ross , Joyce , Angott , Armstrong , Nazarov , Thobella , Chavez , Camacho , Ortiz , Buchanan & Duran out of all d boxers who ever existed .
1 would think Nazarov's resume is poor but considering he got shot and had a damaged arm and even in his "loss" when he got thumbed and became semi blind he still lasted d distance , not 2 mention he was 32 by then , and had part of his prime deprived of him because he had 2 start his career relatively late because of d Soviet system . I doubt if Canzoneri could undergo d same and retire unstopped . Maybe he could though .

 

I just love it when the old footage is filmed right or corrected, thats the stuff that can silence the skoffers about past greats, whats the difference between that fight and todays - all just as capable, one to the other...

major diff though, Canzoneri & Kid Chocolate were doing that every other week against top draw for the most part - that would soon change who's left standing today IF the top men fought each other regularly!!!

hell even if it was 6 - 8 fights a year againt each other (champs or contenders), that would sure change the outcome!
