Ricardo Lopez used to switch to southpaw for an instant whenever he was changing direction. Duran used to fall in behind the right hand lead, and then follow it up with a left to the body upon turning southpaw. Used as a method of closing the distance more effectively.

Not the same thing, but there are uses for learning southpaw when the opportunity calls for it.

I'd say it's more to do with him being a physical phenom. Maintaining his speed and power whilst moving up in weight against slower, less capable fighters. He's shown improvement technically, but it usually only shows against the right types of fighters.

:huhThat was pretty much all he did back then.

He didn't set it up properly - the jab was a rangefinder for the left, where now he uses it to control his opponent and direct them where he wants them. It's a weapon that he can hurt with.

Saying he's a physical phenom perhaps underestimates what Roach did with him. The conditioning, physical talent, etc, all play a part. But if he didn't have Roach, he'd not have been beating Cotto, Oscar, etc - his technique and his footwork were all dreadful. I just used the jab-straight as an example of something Roach refined.

    what proof?
My claims are based on modern sports science
LSD running develops your slow twitch fibres which will affect your explosiveness Also boxing is mostly anaerobic whilst LSD running is aerobic so it's not a sport specific form of conditioning for boxing. And yes there are still modern day fighters that are training incorrectly.

No evidence of it increasing risk of injury. And modern S &C should actually reduce injury and help improve performance. If they were causing more injuries athletes from other sport disciplines would stop doing them
I'm pretty sure Manny would admit that Ariza's training methods have helped his performance. I didn't say modern conditioning methods have made fighters vastly superior.Modern conditioning methods don't improve your skill level but they are better at improving your stamina, explosiveness compared to old school conditioning

:patsch they are not "exotic" exercises they are based on science and research. Every other sport has benefited from them and there is no reason why they can't benefit boxers.

Those BHOP pictures are great, I've showed a few guys I've helped out the trick of touching the shoulder and also using the lead hand as a distraction (especially this).

One thing that has worked for me a few times and it really is a weird feint/distraction, is holding the hand high like Hopkins shows, then lowering it quickly just infront of their gloves, as if you've fell short of slapping their gloves and then shooting the straight right. Weird, but it works

Also, great to see a pro register and comment after reading the thread :thumbsup

no it was a combination of things:

good skill training + good conditioning training > good skill training + bad conditioning training

Fighters fight less frequently than ever before and still manage to gas out within 12 rounds. I think the while 'improves your stamina' is complete and utter bollocks when it comes to the fight game.
