Just How PHYSICALLY STRONG is Mayweather?

    After fighting him, JMM said Floyd is quicker than he thought but also not as strong as he thought.

    fair enough, I just think his elite nature is in reflex, coordination, mental toughness, and instinct, but not in strength. When I ran into him several times during his run at 140, I was constantly surprised at how slender his frame was - I can see why he started at 130 lbs. He hits hard because he throws every ounce of his speed and momentum and body into that punch, but I think Floyd is elite in everything except strength.

    interesting there's actually some short footage of Floyd using a weight machine. I forgot the name. It's the one where you sit down and pull a wide bar down towards your back and shoulders.

    yeah but those machines aren't "real" weightlifting - that's more like a pullup simulation, the lat pulldown right? And those machines are not quite like the "free" weights. Whether Floyd plays with it, I know Roger doesn't like free weights. He has a little sheet he gives to starting fighters of stuff not to do - free weight chest stuff is right at the top of his bogiemen.

    I'm not saying Floyd doesn't do strength exercises; he just doesn't waste his time on stuff like bench press that is primarily for getting good at ... bench press.

    Judging by the pics I've seen of you, you seem like you'd be a good person to answer this: do you think exercises like power cleans, deadlifts, and squats would be beneficial to a boxer?

    Floyd is skinny but he looks very strong to me. I have seen many skinny guys that are stronger then bulked up guys. I was working with a guy one day on a construction site he was maby 150 pounds and he got pissed off and bent a crowbar with his bare hands.

    As far as the explosive full body lifts, I think it would be beneficial for you if you relied on your physicality like, say, Ricky Hatton, where you had to move quickly and push, but I am going to be really honest: the best boxers I have seen at middleweight and below spend most of their time doing long endurance training and technique, bag work, drilling for boxing. If all you do is stuff like squats, power cleans, etc, you may become more explosive in the first round or two, but its much much more important to spend time on endurance conditioning.

    It's really a tough question to answer. I feel like the two best pound for pound boxers of right now really DON'T need that stuff. Pac's physicality is from natural power, sprinting, high intensity bagwork and sparring. floyd is precise technique and natural coordination and reflex combined with superb cardiovascular conditioning. They don't need that stuff. I think someone like Hatton did.

    My friend in Vegas used to have it, from when he was training at Berry's Boxing and Roger would stop in and help train back then for them. I will write him and see if he still has it. We used to talk about stuff like that all the time.

    I know a lot of old school trainers also wouldn't let their guys touch weights because too much bulk muscle can **** up your fluidity and hurt your stamina as well as add extra weight when most boxers are trying to keep their weight down so they can fight guys naturally their same size or smaller, if possible.

    Mayweather probably does alot of calisthenics which in some ways is better than benching because its using your own bodyweight.
