Cheers for that slip re: Cross armed Defence. :good

Vids already been posted above of Napoles-Lopez 2, but made a gif of the punch in question, from 4:40 of the vid onwards:

Beautiful shot, barely looks like a grazing shot from this angle but you can see Lopez's legs sink from the impact.

We've dealt with power and speed. What about the whiskers? How much can ones punch resistance be improved, especially compared to power and speed. Which one of the three would you say was more innate and natural?

    I'd say.

    Chin
    Power
    Speed

Chin being the most innate and natural.

  6. Punch resistance..... all sorts I could imagine.

You're never going to turn an eggy chinned fighter into someone capable of walking through Mike Tyson though.

    Exercises - neck muscles, legs

Techniques - seeing shots and turning away from them, so when you're hit the meaty part has already gone

Style - better balance, a more forward leaning stance, with feet wider apart

sounds stupid, but 'accepting' youre going to be hit is something i found helped when sparring. dont tighten yourself up

I think you can do certain excercises to try and improve your punch resistance. Strengthening your neck. With the neck harness. Being as supremely conditioned as possible. Staying calm under the gun and always keeping your eyes open, trying to see everything. Relaxation excercises and of course most importantly, learning to take the sting off power punches so even if you get caught you take out the full impact of it. Some people as with power and speed will only have limited improvements, some non at all no matter what they do and others will just be natural.

One thing that i think is underrated which impacts almost everything, but mostly the speed, power and punch resistance is breathing properly. There's actually a way to breath properly in boxing.

Fancy doing a breakdown of Mike Tyson? Alot of people make the mistakes with his style and think he is a brawler....not true.

You're the man for the job, mate. :good

I've done enough waffling on in this thread, plus you like your heavyweights. ;)

Breaking down fighters is something we haven't done enough of though. Welcome reminder.

I think the chin is the most innate and un-improvable aspect of any boxers natural ability.

So long as we make the distinction between "chin" and "punch resistance".

Trying to improve the chin would be as futile as trying to improve the temple.

Once you're hit with a clean shot, the neural message is sent to the nervous system and you're at the mercy of your own physiology.

Punch resistance however can be built up with neck strengthening exercise, aerobic/anaerobic conditioning and of course technique, rolling with punches, footwork, balance etc.
