Jeffries Made $$$$$ On The Stage But Threw Away Any Chance Of Victory

After he had announced his comeback , [he signed on August the 11th 1909 ,] Jim Jeffries, took advantage of the renewed interest in him to go on two ,back to back vaudeville tours, these netted him an absolute fortune in $$$$.

However, in doing so ,he forfeited any chance of regaining his old time endurance and stamina he may have had, instead of sparring and engaging in a warm up bout or two, he was busy raking in the moolah.

Despite pleas by his friends, Jeffries turned a deaf ear to them ,and went where the gold was ,on the stage.

This link shows that in November of 1909 , [8 months before the fight ,] his closest associates were telling him to buckle down to real ring work.

A 40 years old heavyweight champion is due to defend his title this week end.

Jeffries was 35, with only 22 fights on his mileage clock, when he came back to challenge the 32 years old Johnson.

Johnson himself kept his title until he was 37.

 

Really J? Have you seen it?
I was under the impresssion this had generally been discredited.

Jeffries made a reference to some exhibitions in the uk but no fights as some aver.

Let us say he had another 6 or 7 fights,unlikely really as a world's champion's resume naturally comes under pretty close scrutiny, but ,if he did it would still put his total under 30,so ,as I pointed out ,negligible ring wear and tear.
