Monzon is the best middleweight IMO...But the following give him trouble stylistically for different reasons...and this group could beat anyone at the weight. Robinson, Hagler, Burley (Charley just might might give Monzon the toughest fight), and Hopkins.

On GP's shout out on LMR...I think Luis would give Monzon major headaches in the early to mid rounds, but Monzon's strength and rough tactics in the clinches would wear down Rodriguez... IMO

Dan the Man brings back the class to this thread. Well done, good sir.

I'd agree with those that said Robinson on his best night gets the job done. Anything less than his peak performance and he probably comes up short, I think. Wouldn't favor any other Middleweight I've seen, but Hopkins would be my next best choice. Jones is a very interesting match up for any Middleweight, obviously, but Monzon's just about the worst guy to put anyone who lacks real top level experience in against. For the younger, greenish kind of freak talents, Charles is a better call here. He at least has those wins over Burley and Yarosz to fall back on, but then we've never seen him at the weight.

Many thanks Cobra....and you're right. Charles is the better call according to the record.

Luis Rodriguez would have troubled Monzon in the same way that Griffith did in their rematch, but remember, that was Monzon's first fight after being shot. Monzon's coldly deliberate style and counterpunching would have added together with Luis's style to produce a less than exciting fight to the casual observer, but would have been very interesting to someone who really appreciated boxing's other side. Carlos was, in my opinion, no matter what his detractors like PP and others may ever realize, just the best of all the middleweight champs for very subtle reasons, and would have been too strong for Rodriquez however. Nino scored that big ko, but that sort of ending was atypical for him. Monzon was far stronger and a better puncher than Nino but he was more likely to counter and out general Luis in that distinctive way of his to take a rather drab decision (in the latter half of his title reign). The earlier version of Monzon that twice ko'ed Nino would have stopped Rodriguez as well, only earlier, without the desperation of being behind and needing a Hail Mary ko finish.

Greb would overwhelm Monzon as he deid with great bigger men than the much slower Monzon. He did it with Tunney, Tommy Gibbons, Jack Dillon, Gunboat Smith,Tommy Loughran, Maxie Rosenbloom, all bigger than Monzon..Remember speed kills and no MW in history had the offensive non stop attack of Harry Greb, with the ability to never be in the same spot for a second...Greb would make the much slower Monzon look like he was in first gear. You couldn't knock Harry out, and you couldn't land more punches tirelessly for 15 rounds.
P.S. I would also take the prime hard punching Freddie Steele to beat Monzon also...
And I would add Marvin Hagler to befuddle Monzon IMO...

It's far far better than "Jones hits Monzon at will without getting hit". That's just crazy, crazy patter. It's also what you say for every Jones fantasy match up.

Burt, how many out of that 30's pack (you picked about a dozen to be a real threat to Hagler) do you think would be a chance of turning the trick vs Monzon?

Suprised nobodies given the other Sugar a shout.

I think Monzon vs G-man would be a very interesting one, Gerald has longer reach, very durable and hit's harder than anybody Monzon has ever faced.

Jones jr has as good a chance as anyone.

When you have the sheer athletic ability that jones had there's every possibility that jones keeps it incredibly boring on the outside potshotting for 12 rounds.

Jones was very physically gifted so I don't think there's a danger of him slowing down over the distance. I also think the chances of anyone landing a counter as tarver did is minute because of his sharpness and reflex whilst prime.

Now obviously monzon is proven against a wide array of styles and he would have success during the fight maybe even a lot of success if he can time and land enough shots to discourage or anger jones.

If jones can keep discipline and treat every round as basically a 3 minute fight he should be able to take it on points.

Griffin showed the the right mix of timing and accuracy can offset jones and affect him mentally making him prone to silly risks. The way he came out guns blazing in the rematch maybe suggests a possible stylistic weakness but it could also suggest determination to right the wrong in the most devastating fashion. Either way that's the time we saw him struggle in his prime and whilst I had him ahead on points he was clearly mentally frustrated as he showed by walloping him when he was down.

Could carlos time and hit jones enough to frustrate him? Absolutely. No way could jones come out guns blazing and blow carlos out of the water either. The key is mental strength. Jones should be favoured to keep his cool over 12 and outpoint carlos. Maybe 8-4 type decision possibly closer if carlos can start strong.

I don't consider any losses outside of one's prime so I don't believe in this tarnishing of legacy business. Jones was seen as superman during his prime and he proved his ability throughout his career. The truth is there's noone i'd favour over him between mw and lhw. I'm not saying he's unbeatable but i'm saying you could pick any man from mw to lhw and pit him against jones and there's noone i'd favour to beat him.

I am not saying he beats Monzon, i am saying he has the tools to potential try and box with him competitively.
