I don't think just because some guys boxed Duran and beat him a great boxer like Floyd can beat without question. I think he could but it's not that simple. There are subtle things about fighters, you can't just say "speed and make him miss". Yes that works but it's more about the specific guys that beat him.

 

At 154 Floyd wins for sure

 

floyd wasn't exactly a killer at 154. a part-time boxer/promoter in oscar was competitive until he gassed.

I don't think Floyd's specific style is wrong for Duran. We've seen that Floyd prefers setting traps against the ropes when a fighter is consistently aggressive, as opposed to consistently pivoting out and controlling the center. 154 may be a question mark in terms of Duran's abilities, but prime for prime, Duran has too much of everything for Floyd. He has the jab to exploit Floyd's weakness in pulling straight back; he has the better infighting skills up close, where he's likely to trap Floyd as his pressure is better than Floyd's lateral movement; he's the harder puncher, and has just as good or better timing. If anything, I think Floyd's very versatile but formulaic style and skill-set would betray him against someone as fluid as Duran; he's the one that doesn't match-up well.

 

A motivated Duran like the Montreal version would walk thru his best punches. Floyd gets worned down and rocked in almost every round. Lets be real Floyd ain't no Leonard. 135-147 its all Duran and 154 its 50-50. Floyd wasnt that great at 154 either.

Duran at his best wouldn't have to walk through many of Mayweather's punches. His defense was every bit as good, and his reflexes were probably better as he wasn't safety first and still managed to slip and roll shots almost effortlessly most of the time while being aggressive and offensive. He didn't have to use a high-guard or anything like that. He'd give Mayweather a lesson on the inside. Superior offense in close, positioning, instincts, brilliant defense, and a more punishing and free-flowing/fluid offense.

Duran at his best was a clear cut above anybody today. In most cases, three or four levels above if we're talking the Berto's and Ortiz's of the world.

 

Only in the sense that it's a Latin fighter against an African-American fighter. Stylistically, Cotto-Mayweather is miles from Duran-Leonard. And even if you want to draw similarities from a style perspective, the gap in skill level is absurdly wide (especially comparing Cotto and Duran). I don't think Cotto is more skilled than somebody like Emiliano Villa who Duran beat.
