Legally you are allowed to pre-emptively defend yourself. Chisora was going to assault Haye. He had already assaulted Vitali and Wlad and he walked over to Haye in a threatening manner. Haye reacted before Chisora attacked him. I genuinely thought he would run away when Chisora walked over. He gained my respect in many ways.

Yes. I am currently studying law and self defence can be pre-emptive. If genuinely believe that someone is going to assault you (so 17 stone 3lbs of Chisora who has already assaulted both Vitali and Wladimir coming towards) is perfectly legal. On watching the video the glass didn't actually hit Chisora. Haye's fist did, he just happened to be holding a bottle. Haye may be in trouble about the tripod however. That was unnecessary really - he wasn't in danger then he had people between him and Chisora's trainer.

That you can hit someone because you think they will hit you. How can you possibly know unless they say "I'm gonna punch you etc"?

I personally don't think haye meant to hit with the bottle, just threw a punch without realising he was having a drink! it looks like he punched him with the bottle in the hand (would do more damage to himself if it shattered in his hand) not 'bottle' him!

Well there are two parts to self defence. The first is objective and that is the use of reasonable force which can be pre-emptive and there is discretion allowed in the heat of the moment - Haye would probably be fine here - he didn't actually glass Chisora and he had Chisora's whole entourage coming towards him. The second part is that the force used was used in the circumstances as Haye honestly believed them to be - this is subjective so Haye would be regarded as innocent if he genuinely thought Chisora was going to assault him even if Chisora wasn't. Haye will be in trouble over the tripod as I have said. But the first punch to Chisora? He'd be fine. To be fair the only person Haye hurt with the tripod was Adam Booth by accident and he won't press charges anyway.

If I ever end up hitting someone I'm using this defense.

lol go for it. Remember to have witnesses and use proportionate force so one punch only not 20. Also you have to persuade a jury you genuinely thought you were at threat from an assault - so if you're 6'3'' and hit a 5'4'' 60 year old you probably won't convince anyone you felt threatened.

Yeah Derek was being a thug getting up out of his set..but did Haye need to use weapons..really that would have been a good right hand without the bottle. Also he threw **** at him and swang a triopod at him. Sounds like a bit of ***** move...thuggish..sure....street fighting stuff...sure..but also looks like he was a bit scared to engage. Also kind of funny with how David Haye trains some in mma and was still scarred to throw.

It takes a lot of courage to throw the first punch. Haye really pisses me off with his mouth. If he didn't mouth of so much people would have more respect for skills which are honestly vast. But he gained a little bit of respect when he stood up to Chisora who had been a bully for 48 hours preceding the fight with his slap, spit and general intimidating attitude.
