Pure Wrestler vs Pure Boxer, MMA match, no cross training for either.

  1. I often hear how badly addapted for mma straight up boxers are. however, I work out at a local mma gym and have often done some mma training with college level wrestlers. When they are brand new they are pretty damn easy to hit...and many are often a bit too nervous and try to shot in from a far distance. Of course attiude matters a good bit as well...guys who are less "scarred" do better to start.

Anyhow, how do you think it goes, equal skilled equal sized boxer and wrestler...mma match. We can also assume different styles of boxers...I for one do feel that certain styles of boxing are better for mma then others (boxer punchers who are somewhat mobil i think is the best boxing style, not sure about which form of wrestling is best.)

  4. fair play....

to give my own response..i do think the wrestler wins more often..but i think due to the wrestler having no striking training he does lose on a fair number occassions...espically if he is hesitiant and shoots from the outside..which often happens when i wrestler has never had to deal with the possibility of being punched.

A highly skilled boxer against a highly skilled wrestler would end up a 80% KO in favor of boxers.

I believe a high level boxer would easily counter a guy charging in with well timed uppercuts.

Wait, stop talking about this **** and just watch Ali-Inoki on youtube.

    Then you'll find the answers.

  7. ahhhh...how real that was is still in question..but really...Inoki trained with kick boxers and boxers..so it really isnt releavent...in a sense Inoki was trained as a mixed martial artist who due to his time mostly did pro wrestling (which still has some use for balance and body leverage and staying in shape).

but what i am talking about is a guy who is freash out of a college program or even a olympic program who may have never had a more then a few punches thrown at him in drunken fights..and has never trained for punches comeing. And really the best thing to do on a far distant shoot isnt to try to stay in and plant a uppercut..its just to step back and to the side and throw whatever..and then keep throwing.

If that's the case then it would be too tough for the wrestler indeed.

All the boxer has to do is wait, since the wrestler's only option is to shoot, get close and grapple. The boxer won't have any concern whatsoever with incoming strikes or feints.

Besides, a pure wrestler with no striking whatsoever would look so silly even if he does try to attempt to strike and a boxer would easily capitalize.

How real that fight was is not in question. It was a shoot, which is why Ali insisted on such dodgy rules. Likewise Lennox Lewis backed out of a proposed shoot match with Brock Lesnar in 2003 when he discovered that Lesnar wasn't any old phony pro-wrestler.

And the history of cross-matchers suggests that wrestling usually beats boxing. Obviously boxers have a punchers chance but once it gets to the mat, then its game over. http://sports.yahoo.com/mma/news?slug=dm-boxersnmma082310

  10. ahhhh again though..i think you can make a strong argument that wrestling is a better "base" when addded with other training. But my point is a pure boxer and a pure wrestler. All the guys who ever did cross matches had done a good bit of boxing..the guy who took on Bob Fitizomns had himself done a good bit of boxing.

Really must go with the wrestler 8/10 times.

  13. might be right...but i have trained with some wrestlers who are brand new to mma..and for the first month they are so hesitian that they cant get a take down worth ****..and when you start to throw they back straight away and get drilled..it seems to be a pretty common reaction.

I think it's similar to the old "street fight" debate. Most fights end up on the ground and it is there where the wrestler would win a points based decision most of the time.
