What are some good heavybag drills you guys use to keep your workouts interesting? I feel like my training on them has gone pretty stale and im looking for some new things that i can try and mix in to keep it interesting. Some rounds ill do nothing but outside fighting, maybe all body punching one round, maybe inside fighting the next etc etc. But i feel like im aimlessly picking things to train. What are some good things to work on and some good drills to incorporate into working the bags? Thanks!
do intervals, 15 sec flurry, 15 sec rest 2nd round 15 sec bombs, 15 sec rest or 15 sec punch in your own pace, 5 sec flurry, 15 sec your own pace, 5 sec bombs etc..
If your technique is right and you endurance is good (those being the initial aims of hitting the heavy bag), you need to start fighting the bag. Work everything off defensive moves, as if somebody were throwing punches at you, and when you punch don't just stand there. Get out, change the angle and attack again. Also, you really learn to handle a body when infighting by working the bag. Engage your mind.
You may also want to try the following, which worked pretty well for me, so far as developing accuracy. Of course, I stole the idea, but it is pretty effective. Use tape or a marker and put targets on your heavy bag. Make a target for your jab and right hand, another to represent the solar plexus, for the liver, the heart, the pit of the stomach. When you hit the bag practice slipping a jab and countering with a right to the heart and a left to the liver, for example, and so on. Really helps. I read that freddie Welsh developed his accurate jab in this fashion.
i actually had seen this demonstrated on a youtube video years back but had never thought to try it, good idea
