I know there are those that think arguello beat Marcel. Might be an interesting fight to go back and score.
I think the majority of poster here know a fair amount about boxing history and know about Duran's win pre Buchanon.
marcel built up a big lead, then arguello came back into it and had him hurt more than once by the end. I don't think it was a robbery.More of a close fight that could be debated.
Probably top ten all-time, though after the win over Pryor, he probably wouldn't have held the belt too long, less than a year.
If they had fought earlier, Arguello would stop him anyways. Had they fought at lightweight Arguello would've completely knocked him out. The black bottle was completely unfair to Arguello.
Pryor wouldn't even be considered an all time great without the win over Arguello. Hell, it's difficult to include him as one with it. Pryor won the fight because he was the better man. Period.
Calling him incredibly green for the marcel fight is a bit naive. It's just more that marcel was experienced.
He'd smashed Legra inside a round for ****s sake. Not just more experienced, Marcelwas one of the most diversely skilled feathers of all time.
I don't think anyone would doubt marcel's skillset to be honest. But in terms of the "green" comment, it just aint true. So i'd say marcel was experienced as opposed to alexis being green.
Arguello was trailing when he came back to knock out Olivares in November 1974. (Well, I thought Alexis was behind. Anybody can watch it for themselves on youtube.) Marcel was still just 25 when he retired, and much less ring worn than Rock-a-Bye Ruben. (Ernesto came in with 45 bouts against Arguello, while Olivares had 82.) I don't see it as a given that Alexis wins a rematch with Marcel, who looked to still be improving when he called it quits.
Good post Duo and I think most would agree Arguello came from behind to beat Olivares. Great fight though.
Arguello was still majorly improving at the time he fought Marcel for mine. Still improving and growing post Olivares too.
