i doubt they get the same viewership for LOI as they would boxing, but i assume they have a deal with the FAI where the cost is tied in with the International package. Or teh FAI demand they show a set amount of games from LOI to get the internationals at a cheaper price??? not sure? lets hope they do back one of the Olympians. but it means an Irish promoter coming on the scene.
You doubt? You assume? What are the figures? If you are going to do an article like that basically calling everyone that is pissed off and the lack of coverage as moaning caaaants then at least have done a bit of research. What are the costs involved in producing these other shows and how does that compare to a ProBox show. What are the viewing figures for all other sports shows and what are they for boxing? What other "minority sports" do RTE show, what does that cost and what where the viewing figures? Compare apples with apple not apples with pears!
Lindsay is back. There will be a certain shiny nappered weegie around Dunmurray that will be happy with that news. This content is protected
now slap come on dont be putting words in my mouth! i never abused anyone and i understand peoples frustration- just saying there are things we can do and there is more of a logical explanation than Ryle loves rugby and hates boxing!! I never brought LOI into the arguement- just responding to a comment here. i showed rugby figures.. and from working in news rooms rugby and soccer are god - and in some cases more loved than soccer because they bring an ABC1 market in! i didnt want to get into all that. again cost is irrelivant with minority sports becasue as a PUBLIC SERVICE BROADCASTER the have to show them. They show them once off like boxing... you hit me for a year for lacking an opinion? we add opinion to the site and you have a go again!
You cant compare boxing with GAA, Rugby, Golf or Football - boxing is a minority sport. But, when there are big world title fights boxing can draw as many punters with all of the sports - there are past figures on ITV to back that up. Also, boxing can be screened on the fly, as evidenced by Setanta's live coverage of amateur boxing, i.e. less camera men etc. Good boxing promotions can draw advertising revenue with commercial breaks after every round, the international rights can be sold to other countries, bigger international audiences attract bigger sponsorship opportunities. It is never going to compete with football, rugby, golf etc, but it a lazy argument to say it is far too expensive. The wider and most significant issue in this argument I feel is that boxing is Ireland's number one Olympic Sport. The State has made a great investment in the high performance centre and programme and it has yielded great results in the major tournaments. But, what is the outlook for our best amateur boxers after the London Olympics? Why is our State broadcaster not allocating budget for our number one Olympic Sport and successful stars? What are there opportunities to turn pro in Ireland? Gary Hyde said if he got RTE TV he would snap up the cream of the Irish amateur squad, but no promoter is going to build a big stable without tv support. And I am sure Brian Peters would do the same. Peters ran some great cards when he had RTE tv - the Dunne-Cordoba card was fantastic. It is total fantasy to suggest that a promoter should pay for the broadcasting costs of a boxing promoter for the benefit of television. TV should be paying for this.
I'm not trying to bash you Jonny but if you are going to have an opinion make sure it is coherent and the dots join up. At the risk of repeating myself, compare apples with apples. Give us a list of the sports that RTE air, how much coverage do they give it, what do it cost in terms of acquiring the rights and also the production and finally what are the viewing figures. Then compare and contrast that with boxing.
Bren talk to any boxing promoter they are told it costs 50 k up to broadcast it. its not the camera men and such its the outside broadcasting unit- seriously from sitting in two such meetings they claim there is no way around that cost other than recording and showing delayed coverage! and i didnt sugges the promoter should pay- i said one did and rte have since asked for money.Peters says he cant even approach rte because they won't give him anything for shows now because they were paid. Peters ran great shows and i think even andy lee pulled in 200,000 viewers. and if you are tv company with limited air time for sport you have to put them all together.
It seems mad that it costs that much. You would think there was some production companies out there who would be willing to cut there costs on filming the event to get more regular work. We need a Ryanair type of tv production to do the fights with them getting a big percentage of the advertising money than what they do. Got to think there must be some of am lads thinking about turning pro in the coming months if they are 25 plus they might feel they will be too old for the next Olympics so turning pro is there way of doing it. Sadly they will have to uproot and move to the UK or US for there pro fights it seems. I know the Hattons had a few fights on youtube live maybe this could be a option for promotors here to look into. I dont know how much it cost but it is just an option that might not have been looked at by promotions out there.
Why? I dont think it is one single reason it is a variety. But you know what, if I was going to do an article like that the first person I would have asked is your mate Nugent.
