    ---------

Holmes was undefeated until he was 36 years old, 48-0. He reigned for approximately 6 years and beat: Ken Norton (past his best?), Earnie Shavers, 15-0 Tim Witherspoon. Some years later, past his best, he beat Ray Mercer.

Lewis was a member of a better generation of heavyweights. However, he was knocked out by McCall and Rahman; he avenged those loses. He reigned from 1998 until 2004 (with an hiatus after the Rahman loss). He beat Evander Holyfield (37 years old), Mike Tyson (past his prime), David Tua, Ray Mercer, Tommy Morrison, Razor Ruddock, Vitali Klitschko.

    Who should rank higher?

I have Holmes higher, but I perfectly understand arguing for Lennox, here.

Larry reigned from 78-85 and lewis from 99-04.

Lewis did nothing special in 98, certainly nothing worthy of surpassing a holy who'd stopped tyson twice and mm once.

Not an easy pick, but I'll lean towards Holmes.. Neither man's opposition was stellar per say, but I wouldn't call either resume crap either... Both fought a fair number of middle of the road to decent opponents, so I'll just call it even... The obvious tie breaker for me, would be that Lewis suffered a bad loss to a fringe type contender at a time when he supposed to be reaching his peak.. Holmes never lost to anyone of that calibur when in his prime... In fact, at the age of 44 he faced the exact same opponent shortly after Lewis was beaten by him, and fought him to a close decision that could have gone either way... Asside from that, I'd say they're ratings should border one another's. I won't count Lewis's defeat to Rahman as Lewis was the same age as Holmes when he lost to Spinks. Both men should have been credited as avenging those defeats however, had it not been for poor officiating in Holmes Vs Spinks II...

I generally find myself rating Holmes higher. I think he's a better H2H fighter also.
