hes recently stated himself this was his best fight ever. At first, as a Tyson fan i could never bring myself around to watching it, however now, i watch it with lots of interest and i feel although Tyson got his ass kicked, he deserves much more 'credit' for this loss than he gets. To me, the fight is a poor mans Bowe-Holyfield. The Douglas fight in my eyes answers all the questions about Tyson that maybe his victories didnt. He showed more heart in this fight, than he ever has in his whole career Yes Tyson was under prepared, under trained and maybe not focused, but what i learn from this fight is Tyson had tons of heart, he was fighting back all the way until round 9-10. Its just he was throwing one punch at a time against a guy who was throwing numerous combinations. Tyson didnt just 'cave in', he nearly turned the fight around with that uppercut, but the round finished before he could captialise. His chin and heart and proven in this fight IMO Alot of people underrate this version of Tyson and say XYZ would have beaten Tyson that night, i beg to differ, the only guys who box anything like Douglas are Holmes, Bowe and maybe Ali. I still pick this version of Tyson to ko most guys (But thats another thread) [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8nrKkmz16m4[/ame]
I agree with yer on the fight proving that tyson had a big heart but i disagree strognly with yer when yer say few HW's could of beaten him that night. i think theres more than the four you named that could of outhustled tyson that night
At first I was like WTF... Then I read the content. Indeed, Tyson never caved and showed a tremendous chin and heart. He was losing the whole way through. He doesnt even throw that uppercut in the 8th if he's a fighter packing it in under distress. Even when Douglas is knocking him into the ropes and has him wobbling he is swinging back ferociously.
No i didnt mean only the above could beat him, i was talking stylewise those guys would prove problems, IMO this Tyson still walks through Spinks, Marciano and Dempsey
Many people completely diss Tyson and it is understandable as he was such an ass most of his career but he did show tremendous heart in his losses to Douglas, Holyfield 1 and Lewis ... that being said I hardly think it was his best fight .. he was flat, not in top shape and poorly prepared ...
Problem with Tyson is, people complain his opponents were scared of him. In this fight you get to see fight against a guy who isnt scared at all. Although Tyson doesnt get the win and doesnt look imprressive, due to being undertrained, he still showed why hes the baddest man on the planet
I think I understand where you're coming from. Tyson was able to show a side of him that we never saw before since he was so dominant in his destruction of fighters when he was at his peak. Despite being thrashed by Douglas he showed he could take an ass whooping and still come back to "almost" win the fight with one punch despite having an off night. Many posters on here claim that as an ingredient for greatness and being able to come back from the brink of defeat. Similar to being knocked down and getting up to eventually turn the tables into a victory. In my opinion, I don't think it was Tyson's best fight but his best fight at showing what he could do in the face of defeat. He came thisclose to pulling it off. Someone stated before in another thread that Douglas was supposed to be Tyson's version of Billy Conn. This couldn't be more truthful.
Douglas was amazing that night, he utilised the uppercut and right hand beautifully, some of his combos were awe-inspiring for a heavyweight. Tyson showed a lot of heart staying in there as long as he did.
Absurd. And rarely ever true amongst professional fighters. There's a difference between scared and taken aback by his speed or dealing with the threat of his power. Most everybody he got in the ring with stood over him noticeably, all had a reach advantage, many were heavier, etc.
really ? even more than vs ruddock ? r u sure ? but , he was d 1st 2 score a kd in that fight and may have a claim 4 a long count although it's hard blaming d ref because tyson quite obviously intended 2 hit douglas while he was down 2 keep him there . in this case d ref rightfully felt it was necessary 2 introduce tyson 2 where d neutral corner was . agree
It's funny how a few seconds can dictate how a fighter is going to be perceived by fans forever after. If Douglas didn't get up from the uppercut, nobody would trot out the line that Tyson was mentally weak, or that he could not win when coming from behind. His standing would be altered in his favour just from that single punch, and the events following it. But, Douglas did get up. Rest is history. It's not one of his best fights though. He was still beaten to a pulp by a huge underdog, albeit one having a hell of a night.
It's almost as if people would view Tyson greater had he been knocked down by Berbick or Thomas and come back to win in the exact same fashion. Worse, if that had happened some would speculate he doesn't win at all. He never got off the canvas to win, so it's implausible he ever would. Beyond **** logic. Tyson didnt hit the canvas easily. He wouldnt of come back to win against Firpo because he never wouldve been down to begin with.
