Roy was a superstar but what the ts is probably trying show is Roy didn't reach the level that he could have. Which is true. Roy could have took his stardom to that level if he would have had a top notch promoter. Although that comes with a price.

To be fair how would he have fought Mclellan ? Fighting Benn after Gman would have been pointless anyway, he was done and i dont think a Eubank fight was even proposed.

His opponent list does lack a certain something but let's face it, he WAS a superstar so kind of a redundant thread.

Nah he wasn't a superstar imo, he didn't transcend boxing or become a nationwide name

As I pointed out, look at Tyson who had his first pro fight maybe 3 years or so before Jones, he is a superstar of the late 80s-mid 90s era, not RJJ.

Not saying Jones COULD have fought all of those people, but fighting in the same eras as them when they had magnificent career defining fights with eachother when they were in or around his weight didn't help him

The two best fighters he did beat, while excellent in themselves, were not superstar draws

Yes he did. He was in the matrix. The rap community knows who he is. He was a commentator. He was/is as well known as George Foreman, Lennox Lewis. Of course he's not Mike Tyson or Floyd but nobody is and that includes superstars. Ali at his peak didn't reach the cult status of Mike Tyson.

I think the main reason he never reached those heights is he never went to the WWE. Every boxer who has been involved with the WWE has become a super star.

Tyson was a special case though wasn't he, i mean he transcended sport in general. What other fighters have been as big as him since even Ali ?
Whitaker, Mayweather, Pacquiao, Hopkins, maybe Lewis and Holyfield are probably the other big big names since Tyson and i wouldnt say any of them are much bigger than Jones was .

Lennox isn't a superstar and neither is or was Foreman

Unless this is just a big case of semantics, but Tyson = Superstar, Ali = Superstar, to a much lesser extent, Manny Pacquiao/Floyd Mayweather = Superstars

Roy Jones isn't a worldwide household boxing name (neither is Floyd), he wasn't a superstar imo, he doesn't have that famous fight, he doesn't have a trhilla in manilla, he doesn't have a holmes in 88 or a Berbick, his name or face isn't one that is absolutely synonymous with the sport from an outside perspective like DLH

People who have never seen Tyson and ali fight know who they are

Lesser people such as Floyd will do millions in ppv numbers whereas Roy wouldn't

He simply wasn't a superstar in that regard, very highly regarded boxer within the sport, but not a superstar

They haven't, that's the point, Superstars don't come along every other day, the point I suppose the OP is making is that Jones had all the tools and the style to BE superstar, so why wasn't he?.......well, my answer(s) is why I beleive he wasn't

Everyone knows Mike Tyson. My mother knows who Mike Tyson is but doesn't know any of those other guys with the exception of maybe Foreman, Ali and Holyfield.

None of the current boxers have reached the status of Tyson, Foreman, Ali or Holyfield but lets also accept that Holyfield has been boxing since forever to get his recognition and Foreman was boxing into his 40s as well and was a grill magnet. Tyson was like the Michael Jackson of boxing in the 80s. When you heard the name Tyson there was only one person on earth you would think about despite the fact that there were corporations by the name Tyson and so on.
