That doesn't help.. but for me... it was the way he cherry picked fights and the spin he would put on his fights to the media
Fair comment. What I would say is that to many (not all), Ali particularly after he came back from exile, had a glint in his eyes, that suggested his comments and behaviour were of the tongue in cheek variety. Now not all agreed with that, certainly Frazier was not impressed, but Ali did IMO have that quality, a quality Ray Leonard has never shown in public to my knowledge.
Gift decision against Hagler...Please. Don't rewrite history. Its infantile. Close fight. Just as many experts, fighters, fans, whatever you want, had Leonard winning as did Hagler, and Leonard got the nod, the record, and the title. He gets that accomplishment, period. Do a poll, if your scared. See how many think it was a gift. Better yet, do a larger poll. Ask the experts. The great boxing minds still alive. The results would disappoint you.
Ray is like the guy that gets challenged to a fight in a bar , backs down and buys the other guy a beer saying that instead of fighting and having problems they should have a good night and bone some of the hotties there, the other guy agrees. The other guy continues to drink all night while Ray stays sober and bids his time, when the other guy is drunk, Ray says some thing to insult the other guy without being a total dick the other guy mouths something back and stands up and Ray sends a few nice shots the other guys way and KO's him. Rays fans , the battered wives club, cheer him on and say that the other guy started it and deserved what he got and that Ray is the toughest SOB that ever lived, while some other by standers ask why did Ray wait until the other guy was plastered but the battered wives club , have the 'win' and to them that is all that matters.
I had Ray Leonard LOSING to Hagler by a point or two but even to make it that close it is still an accomplishment on Ray's legacy and a slight blemish on Hagler's.
That's about the size of it. As I inferred on my post though,he does seem to come across in a warmer way nowadays.
But why is Ray disliked for being calculating and false yet someone like Duran is idolised for being an out and out arrogant, classless ***** (at least in public). I mean Leonard never called anyone's wife a *****, said he should've sent someone to the morgue or said someone could suck his dick as Duran did or made up an excuse for every loss he had without ever once giving praise to his opposition again like Roberto, but he's the one who's hated?!? I understand that folks automatically lean towards the working class, "heart on the sleeve" types but it's not as if Ray came from a priveleged background himself. He worked his arse off to get to where he did and I reckon he should be cut a bit of slack for his personality shortcomings just as boxing fans are so quick to ignore the Durans and Tysons of this worlds general ****ishness.
I agree. As fighters you have to judge them for what they did in the ring, nothing more, nothing less.
i am massivley biased against all golden boys everywhere, and would love for hagler to have won the fight. But he didn't. ray fought smart and won.
If you rank single score out wins, when doing your tag list then Sugar Ray is your man, wins over Benitez, Duran, Hearns and Hagler are legendary. I scored the Hagler fight to Leonard, I also think Hagler thought he lost that fight judging by his actions towards the end- Marvin doesn't play. :nono
