Well, but there are great fighters considered great without ever beating other great fighters. Calzaghe for example - neither Jones or Hopkins were great fighters when he fought them IMO.

All those fighters you mentioned proved themselves and more than once. What about fighters who didn´t? Toney is a good example, he fought in many weights but he never really proved himself IMO, he fought plenty of good fighters but only one great fighter - and got humilated - I don´t think Holyfield can be considered great when they fought.

He had 250 or 300 recorded fights. I find it hard to believe he did not register a great number of his victories weighing 175lb or less.

Choynski was 'respected' by all his peers

Langford was absolutely FEARED by all his peers

    Tunney was under-'appreciated'

    Billy Conn was enjoyed

Ez Charles has been recognised and acknowledged as such

Bivins and co were up there with Charles but were simply avoided

boxrec doesn't help me much with Langford's weight. I suspect he was a light-heavyweight for much of his prime, weighing somewhere around 165 - 175 pounds, going against very good fighters of similar size and some bigger, some smaller. The weights either were not reported or have not been filled in on the site. I'm pretty sure the man was considered a big middleweight/light-heavy in his prime though.
Any details acquired from better research methods would be greatly appreciated. :good

I'm not sure how accurate it is, but if you click the "ratings" button on the header section (the same row that says name, date, location etc) it tells you what division each fight was fought in.

As I say, i'm unsure how accurate that is though.

It doesn't work when I do it. Ratings just takes me to a blank page.
I don't trust boxrec to know this if they don't report the weights.

I daresay a lot of Langford's fights were "heavyweight" but he might have been 175 and his opponent even less ! In those days anyone was allowed to fight anyone.

It's just a little button you click and it brings up the weight divisions next to each fight.

On the same row as the button that says stones or pounds or kilograms I think.

And still never got a shot at the title!

He also beat his fellow outstanding contender clearly in his first bout with Charles.
