Say what you will about Lacy, or the quality of Corrales and Hamed, but all were very worthy opponents at the time. Especially Hamed and Lacy. Both were heavily favored to win.

 

It's clear to see that Hamed was the most well regarded (and rightly so) of the 3 going into the respective fights. Lacy was ridiculously hyped and Calzaghe (rightly again) underrated.

Lacy had what? Reid, Sheika and Pemberton? He wasn't all that.

 

Especially Corrales and Hamed I would say......Wasn´t Corrales a top 10 p4p at the time ?? :think
LAcy never was even close to that.....

 

corrales was creeping into the bottom i believe, hamed probably around 5-8. lacy was definitely not

You shouldn't be surprised with dumb ratings. They happen all the time.

 

Two one off better performances:

Honeyghan/Curry

Douglas/Tyson

With hindsight Toney was so damaged with his weight making demons, that the victory will always have an * to it. Jones never could get that clean top notch win. Which is mighty sad, as he should of been up there, with the Robinsons et al... But he blew it, with his paranoia about getting screwed outside The States.

 

I cited that fight (and the others) because they're one-sided ass whippings where the winner was always in control, never had a scary moment, and hardly got hit, and against credible opponents.

In the case of Lacy, I was going off the perception at the time, not hindsight. Yes, in hindsight, Lacy was vastly overrated.

At the time, all three guys were looked at as having a great chance of winning. In two cases, it was all but a foregone conclusion they would win.

It still says a lot, even if your opponent turns out to be overrated and never does anything else, if a fighter goes into a fight that most fans and experts pick you to lose, and that fighter issues a humiliating beating to the favorite. That takes some serious balls.

 

Calzaghe looked to be stagnant and declining prior to smashing Lacy as well, which made the clean dominance of the fight even more impressive and surprising.

 

Why is so much credence or emphasis being put on Toney being "weight drained" ?

Curry (or his supporters) make the same weight making excuses for the Honeyghan fight. Curry was a "drained zombie" too, according to many.

Was Honeyghans's performance really better than Jones' ?


BTW, I think Honeyghan's performance is up there, perhaps on a par. And I don't discredit it in the slightest because of Curry's weight making demons.

 

He wasn't too far off actually and some were rating him in P4P lists (mainly on forums but still). TBF to him the Vanderpool and Reid performances were pretty impressive at the time. People were picking him over Chad Dawson, Hopkins, Taylor and ofcourse Calzaghe and there were even threads about him becoming a HW champion How I wish those threads could be bumped now

 

The p4p ratings are silly.

You cannot rate fighters p4p currently, it makes no sense, it's just a way to hype them.
It's difficult enough historically, but at least we know it's based on their career as a whole, their overall worth.

But CURRENT p4p ratings, is just absurd.


The RING magazine currently have Pacquiao number 1 at Welter and p4p. But last time he fought he barely beat Marquez who is rated champ at Lightweight. Marquez only gets a #6 rating at p4p, and has no rating at welterweight (or at light-welter).
So .... even with the guys who are capable of fighting each other, it makes no sense. It's all hype and favouritism.
Surely p4p would CREDIT the lightweight doing well against the rated welterweight ..... ?? ... or, if not, it must be becasuse he did so at welterweight .... and in that case he should get a welterweight rating !

Now, how the hell Wladimir Klitschko or Andre Ward is supposed to catch up with Manny Pacquiao I don't know. If a lightweight can damn near beat him in the division he's rated #1 in, and still not get the suitable credit, the bigger fighters haven't a chance ..... unless they suddenly become "favouritised"

It's hype. Pure baloney.

 

I never really bought that excuse. (To me that's what it was.) Toney was outclassed, pure and simple. (More like outsped.)
