Does anyone *strongly* disagree with SRL right under Ali on an ATG list?

I think Leonard gets a bit overrated on those 4 wins.

To be technical (or pedantic maybe ), 3 of those guys must have only been "half champions" anyway. And Duran was champ because Leonard lost to him.

Ray Leonard was great, but I think there are fighters from the past who had a lot more on their resume. There are probably quite a few fighters in history on a par with, say, Benitez at welterweight, who are not remembered as well because they didn't have the big promotion on colour TV against a superstar fighter.

I think Benny Leonard's accomplishments are clear superior to SRL's.

But it's all a matter of opinion.

 

I think it's fair. Personally, I wouldnt have Ray that high, but an argument can certainly be made.

Ah, well IMO there are at least 11, perhaps even more ranking higher than them.

 

Well, this is what mean .... if Thomas Hearns was reigning champion, he was just one of two, because Leonard was champion.

Leonard was champion because Duran was champion, and before that because Benitez was champion.

But if Hearns was champion then Cuevas was champion. ....... while Benitez was also champion.

...... meaning ALL of them were "one of two" champions. They shared the championship. They were "half champions".

Leonard become the FULL undisputed champion when he beat Hearns.

 

Of the 3, one is a top 10 P4P fighter and the other two arnt far behind.

 

SRL isn't even the best Leonard.

Ali should definitely be ranked higher.

But I was replying to MrOliverKlozoff's statement "Dethroning Hagler, Hearns, Duran and Benitez as reigning champions " ....
.... I was allowing for "IF" that's true .... if they were ALL reigning champions, then 3 of them must have been half-champions.

The answer then is that Thomas Hearns was NOT the reigning champion, not even a "half champion". He was a paper champion, actually just Leonard's number 1 contender.

I'd rate Patterson higher if he had beat Johansson at his first attempt.

If Leonard had beat Duran at the first attempt it would have been better too. But then we couldn't use that statement about beating another reigning champion.

 

I don't disagree. Ali's deservedly rated above Ray. Both men's legacy fights featured top quality opponents,but while they're about level on quality,Ali's streets ahead on quantity.

I initially misread the title as "Does anyone *strongly* disagree with SRR right under Ali on an ATG list?" and came in here to voice my vehement strong disagreement-cum-bluster...then realized what it actually said, and decided I don't really care about who people rank higher between Ali and SRL and that there was consequently no reason for me to post in this thread at all...
