To OP: No. Roy Jones beat Tarver in the first fight. He should have retired after that because his body apparently couldn't take jumping up to heavyweight and back down to lightheavyweight. He was never the same after the Ruiz fight. Tarver and Johnson were just that damn good as evidenced by their continued success in the division.

Wasnt Tarver just as old? Tarver had had a long amateur career
A glimpse of his punch resistance was on display when he was badly hurt by Del Valle. Anyone can get knocked down but Roy was having to hold and looking hurt

    Indeed

    STFU *****.
You and your pathetic Vcash have no place on this thread

:patsch Typical deranged Jones fanboy. Starts talking about Calzaghe on a thread about Roy Jones. Seems to really bug you that Calzaghe went up a weight division at the end of his career and beat not one but two American legends. I could pick that weak post of yours apart with the lack of facts, but a dumb twat like yourself wouldnt learn because its not something you have read in The Ring magazine

He beat Tarver in his first fight back at LHW and was competitive in their 3rd fight

Headbanger seems to be dominating the debate.

Its always an honour when you start a thread and an ESB legend like Headbanger comes into it and takes centre stage, brutally dissecting minions and their delusions.
I know that when you left this thread, you went away more educated and with a greater respect for Team Elite

There's really not much point trying to change your view Bailey, you made the thread to express your opinion, not to engage in open minded debate. Instead I will make a point about Eras.

Bernard Hopkins at MW, numerous title defences and B-Hop is considered the King at 160. People critisize his opposition through out his entire reign. Hopkins moves up to LHW/gets short ended by Jermain Taylor and all of a sudden Middleweight becomes one of the hottest divisions in Boxing, Taylor, Pavlik, Wright, Abraham, Martinez, Williams, etc.

Joe Calzaghe has a similar reign at SMW, numerous title defences and eventually becomes the concensus king of the division. His opposition is critisized. When Calzaghe moves up to LHW, then 168lbs becomes one of the best divisions in Boxing. Ward, Froch, Bute, Dirrell, Kessler, Abraham, Bika, etc.

Roy Jones Junior reigns at LHW, has numerous title defences and is considered the number one fighter in Boxing. His opposition is critisized. Jones falls of the perch via Tarver and all of a sudden LHW is a good division, Tarver, Johnson, Hopkins, Calzaghe, Dawson, etc.

The point is that it's stupid to assume that the three ATG champions above had eras which were short of quality opposition, and when they retired or moved on that the division by coincidence became full of talent. Why is it so far fetched to accept that those Champions were so good, so far ahead of their competition?

To use a metaphor here : You can't have a very good race when one horse is so much faster than all the others, but you can have a great horse race with several slower horses who all run at around about the same speed.

Funny one Joe, I never ever liked RJJ, at best I fell sorry for the poor *******. The thing is I might have hated the guy but I cannot deny his greatness. I hate Joe because you are on these boards talking garbage about every other SMW unless you can spin it support calslappy's shitty legacy. I am out because I do not really care about the Great RJJ and the Nobody named Joe.

Personally I think dropping the weight did probably help a lot but with the way most boxers (Hopkins, Calzaghe, Martinez, Vitali, Mayweather, Marquez) can fight now into their mid 30's-40's I dont see how age played a major role

But yes Roy Jones was a tremendous athlete and had the speed and power to trouble anyone but when you take that away he is similar to Pacquiao, tremendous athlete but very over rated as a boxer. Jones' chin was never that good, he just never fought anyone who tested it in his prime and as memory serves he used to lay on the ropes in his prime rather than use his footwork to get out of the way and let himself be cornered

But its niether here nor there, his greatest wins are James Toney and Bernard Hopkins
