    I wouldn't agree with that.

Nor would I! He stood up to way too much from all sorts of punchers, even if he did succumb at times.

Shibata is a weird one. He could be stunned and usually went Kamikaze. He could be starched because of this (Escalera) and could be busted up anyway (Hawkins) and sparked clean with one shot (Villaflor, Sanchez) and be out for a while.

A few things. All of those were heavy handed. There was an awkward beast in there, a Mexican banger with other notable stoppage scalps, a reputed monster in Hawkins, and Villaflor who looked humongous compared to the Jap' in both their meetings.

I've also seen top quality punchers lay hands on Shibata and him not capitulate. And as I say, he certainly wasn't scared of being hit. He was actually pretty durable in the Marcel fight considering he was in danger of being overwhelmed as the fight went on.

I've seen both the Villaflor and Sanchez fight labelled suspect before. My theory is an odd one. When Shibata seemed to not want to get up, I think it was a pride thing. A weird theory but here me out. He'd go down fighting, but wouldn't try and eat the count, either through not wanting to fail or that he wanted to make it clear of he was being dropped it was because he was knocked out.

All spurious bollocks I know. But IMO if they were 'fixed' then I'll have to accept that the clean and aesthetically deadly blows where staged. The Villaflor one in particular, he was gone. Against Escalera he seemed to resign himself to defeat although he (unnecessarily) went out on his shield. Sanchez, I agree that he may've opted out. But again, a good shot he's caught with.

So I'd say his chin wasn't infallible, but he was tough. Just maybe not mentally. Or maybe backed by the Yakuza? ;-)

    Ramble over.

Stevie Wonder could've saw that shot from Glen Johnson coming from a mile away.

Randy Turpin and Bobo Olson didn't have the best of chins, and both are enshrined in Canastota.

I had that fight in mind when I said 'quality punchers'. Shibata seemed to lose focus in some fights, but wasn't 'weak' chinned IMO.

Anyone care to share their thoughts on Shibata's fluctuating punch resistance?

It's funny what you say, for someone who didn't have a good set of whiskers he wasn't wasn't exactly gun shy. I'll have to have a look at those ko's.

Villaflor & Sanchez on YouTube. I can upload Escalera :good

Exactly, he wasn't. Against Escalera when badly buzzed he fired right back, but then got clattered again and just bloody fell over

Your choice of adjectives for each fighter's Achilles Heel, BD, is not only savvy
-- fair -- but artfully distinct.

With Jones and Hearns, i am not sure sure they have bad chins at their best weights, if they do we didnt ever see it so its nothing more than speculation.
