Both Jim Jeffries ,and Jack Johnson were in London at the time of the King's coronation. Jeffries was dining in a London restaurant when Johnson came in, spotting Jeffries ,Johnson advanced towards him ,Jeffries turned his back on Johnson ,and ignored him. Jeffries references towards Johnson are less than curteous too.Check this out.

The interesting thing in that article was the statement that 'Englishmen treat all nigg*ers as if they are white' or something like that.

Whether Jeffries said all that or if that incident happened at all I don't know. Nor do I care. It's all a bit pathetic.
But the perception of the English being "too nice" or too civil towards blacks goes to show how a culture of 'righteous' white racism existed in at least some American minds.

What's pathetic ,imo, is fans of Jeffries, being in denial about his rampant racism. He made enough racist comments to fill a book, and took up the sword as the Great White Champion, returning to restore the title to the White Race.

I'll take your word for it. It doesn't surprise me in the slightest. I don't have high moral expectations from fighters, especially ones from 100 years ago concerning their attitudes towards race. Even 60 years later Muhmmad Ali made a ton of racist statements, and he's the most loved fighter in this age. Maybe he deserves to be too.
The problem is that people shouldn't really hero-worship or expect much from guys who are famous simply because they were good at fighting, or any other superficial talent for that matter. I don't really believe in idolization or hero-worship or excessive fandom at all.
Some 'idols' turn out to be wife beaters, murderers or child molesters, or simply unlikeable nasty people. Still, they can be great actors, great musicians, or great athletes in spite of that.

That's my take on it anyway. :good

And my "pathetic" referred to what I think of the alleged incident between Jeffries and Johnson, and of it being considered newsworthy. If Jeffries is really boasting that he turned his back on Johnson that's a really pathetic story. Just as bad as the silly 'rivalries' and bitchy spats we get from many fighters these days.

Perhaps Jeffries' had a bad attitude towards Johnson because Johnson punched his head in.

Jeffries was offered fights with Sam McVey,and Denver Ed Martin, he refused them on grounds of colour ,though he had fought Bob Armstrong and Hank Griffin previously, perhaps his racism was "selective"?

What do you think the photo indicates exactly?
Just for balance , see below.

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...ands-black-1936-Olympic-hero-Jesse-Owens.html

http://www.ihr.org/jhr/v5n1p123.html Point being, if a photo of Hitler and Owens shaking hands existed ,would that mean Hitler was favourably disposed to blacks?

Here's a question that's more to the point of this thread- if that were Peter Jackson, Joe Gans, George Dixon or just about any other black fighter at that restaurant, would he have received the same treatment from Jeffries?

Did you read Pollack's Jeffries book? There are some unflattering remarks attributed to Jeffries with, say, less than progressive thoughts on other races.

Everything I've read on Jeff makes me dislike him. And he seems rather "simple" also.

I don't know . there are many pictures of Jack Johnson with boxers of all colours, the only ones I have seen of Jeffries are with the hired help,eg Armstrong,is that a coincidence?

Not yet, I will get the next one for certain.
I think Jeffries was quite kind to Fitz, and Sharkey when they fell on hard times, then again, they were the right complexion.
