It's a tough one, you could make arguments for both however I think that Lewis would have been in big trouble.
Its a grey area stoppage, just like Meldrick Taylor against Chavez. The guy clearly beat the count, but was also clearly not recovered. Its a judgment call. Lewis got his revenge.
Lewis was very hurt and shaken, If I was the REF I can not see how I would let this fight go on, Lewis fell into the ref after staggering like a drunk man. I think he could have gotten hurt. As far as saying McCall was not a good finisher, first of all I disagree,he was a decent puncher and Lewis when hurt had a hard time recovering, even with Rahman he got hurt and staggered the round before then took a right hand followed up by one right hand and it put him out. The ref see's what he see's and makes a call....I was a Lewis fan at the time but after watching again I say very good and needed stop. Fights like Foreman Lyle were give and take and If the ref stopped at anytime and gave it to Lyle I could not argue but I he waited until it was evident Lyle could not continue In this fight, like the McCall Maskaev fight the one punch was enough to make the other man donions
Compared to Tyson Ruddock 1, it was a FANTASTIC stoppage. Lewis could've continued but he fell into the ref's arms, meaning his balance was shot. You have to believe that McCall would've thrown bombs in the 2:30 left in the round. Having said that, it is for a world championship and so Lewis should've had the chance to go out on his shield, as he more than likely would've done IMHO. Best thing that ever happened to Lewis as if he'd have taken a few more huge right hands and been seriously KO'd, it could've ruined him as an offensive fighter. He'd have turned out worse than the brother's Klit for Jab, jab, grab.....and would've lost a whole lot more!
I don't see why. A knockout loss doesn't generally warrant an entire change of style. Anyway, I do agree that it would have been unlikely that Lewis would have survived. I'd have just like to have him been given the chance, but I can understand the argument against it.
Lewis was a rugged guy knew how to rough the other guy up, he had a great offense but 2 things he never did that Vlad has 1) KO a man after the 8th round 2) Never got off the floor to win Also Lewis was 2X stopped by a one punch shot (although Rahman softened him up with a right had just prior to the bomb
Yes Lewis was a rugged guy and probably the last truly seasoned hw. Your a good poster BD and what you say here is fair enough, but just to counter your seemingly one-up-manship comments regarding Lewis and Wlad i'll say this. Lewis NEVER took the safety of the canvas as an option rather than take the punches which were incoming. (like Wlad) Nor did he EVER touch down from arm punches or rabbit punches which were thrown from in the clinch. (like Wlad) 1. Wlad's whole way of fighting is largely based on stopping his man late due to him lacking the conviction and having the belief to go in and get someone out of there early. 2.Wlad has got of the floor to win because he really should'nt of been there in the first place. Lewis was stopped on his feet from a bomb thrown blind which he also walked onto. (McCall) He also rose by the end of a fast count from a (quote) "punch that was launched in North Africa and landed in South Africa". In a fight where he was struggling with altitude which admittedly was his own fault. Also Rahman landed that right hand all night and caught him with one equally as hard as the fight ending punch about 20-30 seconds prior. To sum up. These are your opinions but to me they seem pretty hollow little victories when comparing the two men. Infact why was the comparing even called for in this thread?
Overall good post, besides the fact that Lewis rose from the Rahman right hand AFTER the referee counted him out! And Lennox was on his feet only with the help of both referee and Manny Steward. Clear knock-out, Lewis has admitted it many times himself (and the count was exactly 10 seconds, you can see it on the tape).
I got no problem with it he got dropped and stopped. But like i said it was a fast count. How many times have you seen the referee start his count immediately has the fighter touches down. That's right hardly ever. He nearly always makes sure the other guy is in a neutral corner first. The average count is 14 seconds, in Lewis-Rahman it was exactly 10. I remember the referee hindering him getting up by kneeling over him, not helping him up as you say. And it was Courteny Shand who was there first not Manny Steward. So yeah mate go and watch the tape for yourself, i know exactly what i saw. Anyway my op was aimed at Bummy's back handed comments, not to wax lyrical about the Rahman stoppage.
The point is, Lewis was in No shape to continue even if there was a 20-second count, unless you wanted to see a few-minute KO by the next Rahman's right hand. As for McCall stoppage, if the fight went on, Lennox' punch resistance could' ve been damaged if McCall knocked him down hard a few more times. In reality, that loss was good lesson and the reason why Lennox became a better fighter.
For example, Wlad vs Sanders. If the fight was stopped after the 1st KD, it would've been the right call. However, the fight went on and lasted not so long with 3 more KD's
No the point is i was countering BD's comments regarding Lewis/Wlad! Not for one second am i saying Lewis would of gotten through the fifth with Rahman. I was simply correcting you on the events which transpired. For the record, 10-15 seconds later Lewis was on his feet and talking to his corner, so who knows eh. Has for McCall...well we'll never know will we. What i will say though is that Lennox always had confidence in his chin judging by the amount of disdain he showed big punchers throughout his career. Like i said the other day something which led to his two losses.
IntheRahmanfight Lewisbounced against the ropes into Thepunch adding many pounds of pressure I was always impressed by Bruno against Lewis but even though Lewis looked horrible his knockout or tko power went on display
