Ive heard a few people talk about this so im curious to know what people think. To me it was more shocking when Tyson lost for multiple reasons. In the first Tarver fight i realized for the first time that Jones was beatable by this man. I thought Jones pulled a close decision but showed vulerabilites that I have never seen in him. Before the first fight I thought it was simply impossible for Tarver to win. Afterwords going into the second fight I found myself nerveous beacause I realized that Tarver posed a huge threat in this point in Roys carrer, plus I realized Tarver was super determined. Was I shocked at the KO well yeah ofcourse, everyone was. Going into the Buster fight I thought of Tyson as unstoppable with no weaknesses displayed. As the fight started I realized Tyson wasn't near at 100 percent but It looked as if Tyson was finally gonna get him out of there when he was KOed. So for me the Shocker of these both Shockers is owned by Buster Douglas. anythoughts?
Got to say Jones, I was shocked when he hit the canvas. Even more shocked when he hit the canvas the second time
Roy did have an instant shock to it, and Tyson was struggling bad with Douglas, but it was that knockdown Tyson scored on Buster made me think it would be over, to get up and KO Tyson was pretty instantly shocking to me.
Also the way Roy had a strong first round, then in the second Roy started looking like he was gonna be backed up again on the ropes, Tarver looked way more agressive in the second round.... Ill never forget that feeling in my gut though when Roy dropped..I knew it was possible but had to see it to believe it.
Tyson was getting beat up the whole fight, though. The question is about which KO was more shocking. I don't think anyone who saw that fight was THAT suprised by the time Mike got dropped. His aura of invinvibility had been shattered already. Most people who followed boxing thought Mike was cruising for a loss. He had started to slow and just rely on the one punch KO. Then there was his new corner of absolute know-nothings. I think the LOSS was more suprising than the Jones loss, but the Jones KO was more shocking than the Tyson KO.
I wasnt suprised that Jones got KO'd I knew eventually it would happen, but to see Tyson get dominated and knocked out was something. I never expected it, and either did the oddsmakers making Douglas a 40-1 underdog or whatever it was.
If you say Jones, you were probably either very young or not even born in 1990... It litterally shook the world back then. Jones being KO'd was a shock, Tyson being KO'd by underachiever Douglas was a massive earthquake! :deal
Tyson obviously as Tarver was at least considered somewhat capable of giving Jones a fight especially after the close first bout. Douglas on the other hand was a HUGE underdog. But as Mind Reader mentioned, Jones was KOed out of nowhere early in the fight after having a decent start whereas Douglas tooled Tyson the entire fight bar round 9. You know what? I first realized RJJ was beatable against Montell Griffin. But that's a whole other discussion. Anyway, while the Tarver KO was shocking - I heard the news at work, and swore up and down the guy who told me was ****ing with me until I got home a saw for myself...it was shocking, but nothing comes close to what Douglas did. One of the biggest upsets in SPORTS history, imho...
Well, I was only three years old when Douglas knocked Tyson out. So I'd have to say the Jones-Tarver KO was the bigger shock to me. But overall, it doesn't come close to matching Tyson-Douglas.
btw, anyone who votes Jones HAS to be young. I was 10 in '90, but already very much into boxing. Even back then, I realized how big of an upset it was. I can't imagine anyone who was grown enough to understand what was going on in 1990 voting for the Jones KO over Tyson.
