I was more of a Benn fan. But Eubank was more solid all around. Nigel had a lot of heart and quick hands with power.
I have to say,I was very anti-Benn in those days.I remember when Watson beat him,I'd have been about 14 and I remember the way Michael fought took my breath away. The first Eubank fight was similar.Even though Eubank's reign contained many poor quality defences,I always rooted for him.I didn't like the way Benn aligned himself with some very dislikeable bullies,I even rooted for his opponents. Now,with the benefit of maturity and hindsight,I feel bad about the way I looked at Nigel, and even more ironic,I never came to really dislike Eubank, but it was never the same for me when he aligned himself with my team's biggest rivals! I come from a city where you're born to resent anyone who's aligned to the enemy. But the bottom line is they were both great servants to British boxing. With Watson,it was like we had our own version of the four Kings (albeit three!)because there really has been nothing like them since.Being on terrestrial TV played a big part in that. I respect them all a great deal.If you were there it really was a bit special.
Well, I know from watching this..that I like both Benn and Eubank better than Toney..regardless of who would have won between them. Toney comes off again, as usual..as a crude, brainless ghetto thug with no class..whereas both Benn and Eubank display class, especially Eubank.
Eubank was bustin-a-nut for a whitty insulting retort, but he just couldn't come up with anything and he was afraid of exposing his controlled pseudo-intellectual persona. I didn't like Eubank for the same reason I'm not big on a lot of fighters, and that is, if they don't or are not too quick to defend a title against real challengers or their true contender contempories that are official challengers or better rated as such. Chris Eubank forever remains in the list of champions who NEVER defended against the True TOP man!!!
Benn was way more entertaining in terms of his style, but Eubank was the better boxer. I enjoyed watching Benn more just because he was an all out nonstop hard punching warrior, but then again he was also a very dirty fighter, hitting guys when they were down, head butting, rabbit punching, etc. and so I disliked him more.
